Silly question about a lost diamond

Hi ladies -

DH found a loose diamond (about 1 carat) leaving work today. We both think it's fake, but want to find out just for the heck of it.

Can we take it to any jewelry store and have them inspect it?

And (in a long shot) if it turns out to be real, how would we even find the rightful owner? Put an ad on Craigslist? He found it outside on the University campus. I know I'd be sad if my stone fell out.So karma tells me that I would at least have to make the attempt.

Thanks ladies!

Re: Silly question about a lost diamond

  • I have no clue, and how would you know who the rightful owner is.  If it is real, anybody could claim it as their own.

How sad for whoever lost it, if it is in fact real.

  • aww w man BandyB...thats a toughy it's true anyone can say they lost it man do you know how many calls you'll get??? TONS...but i'm like you i'd be too scared.... karma is a b!tch!
  • I would think it is the same for money.  You are suppose to turn it into the police station, explain where you found it.  I think after a certain about of time, if no one claims it, it is yours.
  • I would turn it into the police dept. I would also keep an eye out for "Lost" ads on CL, the newspaper, around campus. That way you could call them and let them know that you found one and turned it in. If it's real, the owner will be looking for it.
  • I am pretty sure you can take it to a jeweler and have it appraised.

  • aw man!  that's tough.  from the posts...i'd turn it in.
  • I don't know if all diamonds get engraved (or just the larger ones) but I think many are laser inscribed with some sort of code or whatnot --like with the jeweler's name or a serial number or something.

You can always have a jeweler inspect it, and then turn it in to the police. They will hold it until it is claimed, or if not, then they'll give it back to you!

  • I would turn it over to university police. It is more likely that someone who lost it right outside of campus would check with Univ. police first before local police. But most places, even macy's, have that little diamond gun that turns beeps if it is a real diamond...it is a pretty cool toy. I bet they would check it for free, a?jeweler?probably would as well.
