Help with at home color: roots ended up too light

Hi. Yesterday I used L'oreal's sun kissed brunettes on my dark brown hair. Following the instructions, I did the roots last, which did have some outgrowth of lighter brown hair, but my roots ended up a very grassy orangish color. I'd like to fix this and Im happy going to a medium brown, which is what I wanted in the first place.

Any suggestions on how to fix it myself and how long need to wait to dye again?

Re: Help with at home color: roots ended up too light

  • Are you sure it said to do the roots last?  I have been having my hair colored professionally and at home for almost 25 years and never have I heard do roots last.  The loreal website also says do the roots first.

Perhaps you should go to a salon and see what fixing it would take, not sure i would try at home at this point

  • I would go for L?Oreal?s burgundy color because it looks very nice always and at any occasion.
  • The reason it says to do your roots last is because of "hot roots" your body temperature speeds up the processing time close to your scalp. Where you went wrong was using this color all over your already dyed hair and from the sound of it, using a color lighter than your hair color to do this. It is a tricky thing to lift color that is on your hair, and I would go to a professional. If you insist on doing it yourself, your best bet is to try and strip the color that is on your hair, use a clarifying shampoo. Then go in with a medium-dark brown and just dye your roots, blending the darker color into the rest of the strand, like ombre but to make your roots a little darker. It should end up evening out. But, I still say go to a pro.
