Lowes or Home Depot for countertops?

Has anyone purchased countertops from Lowes or Home Depot? Would you recommend them?

Re: Lowes or Home Depot for countertops?

  • We went with Lowes and had granite countertops installed by them. They did pretty good.  We don't have any experience with HD for comparison so can't say much.

  • we went with home depot granite (i didnt like the stone choices at lowes).  we found out they sub-contract to a local company.  dealing with Home Depot was a HUGEEEE Pain in the rear.  I shouldve gone with the sub-contracted company directly. damn sale at home depot saved me a few hundred dollars in cash, and lost me a few hundred dollars worth of my sanity. lol

for what its worth - the local company (shell-fab) was AWESOME to work with and installed some great looking granite!  we've even had to have it serviced once already (got a small stain on it), and they were very helpful.

See, I've heard it suggested that you go directly to the subcontractor, but the problem is that I won't know who that is until we purchase the counters! I wish we knew someone to work with directly, but we don't. I checked a few local granite factories, but HD is even beating their prices. And they also have a nicer selection IMO. I am in love with their granite that looks like marble!

  • Did you both do a backsplash? I'm seeing more and more where people are just doing a flat edge and tiling down to it, but I'm worried that it would be a pain to clean that way.
  • Ikea has decent counter tops.

  • In my experience Home depot and Lowes will have great prices on standard color Granite.  Be careful of a price that looks too good as they do tend to quote 2cm material which really isn't designed for kitchen use, 3cm is standard.

As for backsplashes, if you plan on tiling, skip the countertop splash.  If you have the countertop splash it limits the choices of tile by shortening the space, breaks up the decorative intent of the tile and looks like an after thought.
