Help with restoring the top of a black table....

Help....Along with some other wear and tear from the kids i spilled acetone on my black kitchen table. I really need step by step instructions with what products to buy and what is the final step? A sealer over top so its shiny again? Here is a picture. Can i go to a craft store to buy these items? Please be specific! Thanks

Re: Help with restoring the top of a black table....

  • Sorry. Originally i posted the wrong picture. Just it refresh and you will see the correct picture.
  • Nothing will restore bleached color like that.  You'll have to paint the entire top.  Go to the store and grab all the black paint chips you can find and try to match the rest of the table as closely as you can.  When you get ready to paint, add an additive to the paint to eliminate brushstrokes, like Floetrol.
  • I agree, you need to paint it.

Go to the hardware store and ask for help.  I'd go to a smaller store, not Home Depot or Lowes because they will be a lot more helpful than the big box stores in this area.  Show him a picture and he'll walk you through what exactly to buy.

I've refinished a buffet and this is what I did.

get fine grit sandpaper and sand the top lightly.

use tac cloth to thoroughly clean off the sanding dust.

tape off edges so you don't get drips (drips are evil)

paint (keep layers light and do mutiple coats instead of trying to goup it on in one coat)

Let dry and give it a very very light sand with the finest paper.  Just enough to give the top coat enough to stick but don't marr your new paint job

Use a sealer and follow directions.  It's going to be clear and you can get it in different finishes like satin or gloss.

then you are done.  It's time consuming and takes prep work.  But you will be glad you painted it.  Get a good paintbrush, do not cheap out on this because you will not like your results.

    or....

do what I do and put a table cloth on it until my destructive children are adults.
