Furniture for a small Apartment!

I need some tips!  My FI and I are getting married in May and moving into our first place in June.  We've both lived on our own before so we collectively have a TON of furniture (pretty much 2 of everything...if not 4 or 5 of some things like tables).  We're trying to decide what's necessary because our first apartment is small  (we're trying to save $$ for a house in a year or two).  We don't wanna ditch everything since we will be getting a house withing 5 years but we only have a 1 bed room place and are trying to make it comfortable.  Any ideas?  Also can you help me define what some of these decorating styles are?  I know I love soft things, neutrals and rich colors but I don't like lots of frou-frou decorating stuff.  The FI loves simple, geometrics.  How can I incorporate the two and make it "our" space?

Re: Furniture for a small Apartment!

  • do you have family nearby that could store some of the extra furniture in a basement or house in general? (we had my aunt and uncles chair and coffee table in my moms house for a few years before they moved lol)

storage is another option, though it might be not worth the cost.

...is the furniture something that you'll actually want in the house you'll purchase (as far as styles)?  if not, i'd recommend selling it and putting that money towards the house, or newer furniture.

if you're set on keeping all your furniture -- try using a program like 'the sims' or other house-building/room planning site where you can input the size of your room and virtually move furniture around.  you mabye could squeeze in an extra furniture piece or two depending on room layout, which might help.

this was a decent  explanation of some of the furniture styles: http://www.hgtv.com/decorating/design-styles-defined/pictures/index.html?i=1

hubby and i are a mix of arts and crafts, contemporary, and transitional.  we have fairly contemporary furniture and colors (grey, beige, white, dark wood + sage, burgundy accents). we keep accessories to a minimum as well.  he likes more modern clean lines, and i like a bit more 'comfy' materials and things.  our house has turned into a pretty nice mix of the two -- the two styles actually go pretty well together.  you guys sound pretty similar =)

when looking at websites, i find "transitional" style hits a lot of what we like. maybe start there?

  • Ah!  Thank you!  Those definitions are exactly what I needed.  Also I think you're spot in in guessing transitional might be our style!

I'll definitely be thinking about the storage stuff too :)
