Home Inspector, Painting and Carpet Recs

We just reached a deal on the house we're buying and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a home inspector, painter and/or a good place to buy carpet/flooring.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Home Inspector, Painting and Carpet Recs

  • We used VB Inspect in June.  I will always highly recommend them because of how thorough they were. The house was under contract by buyers before us (fell through) and the previous inspector never found that the basement wall was shifted slightly behind our furnace.  Our inspector did and we were able to have the homeowner install wall anchors.

You can schedule everything online.  I would recommend Tim Raufer if you can schedule with him. (VB Inspect)

I don't have much to recommend for the other two -- the house was newly painted before we bought it and what we have painted, we did ourselves.  We replaced the carpeting in our townhouse before we sold it, but we just went with the cheapest shag from Lowe's just to sell.  I'm not sure where I would buy flooring if it were my "forever" flooring! :)

  • Congrats on your home! We always did our own painting, so no recs there, but you could try Angie's List for ideas. We used Scott Kelly at Cornerstone Home Inspection.  My husband always recommends him to friends.

  • We used Matt of Brick Kickers for our home inspection... last February. He was thorough and very quick in getting the report back to us.

The house we sold, had some basement cracks that we had to have looked at by a structural engineer. Long story short. We worked with Russ from Three Rivers Inspection and Engineering.  Getting the report back took a few days longer than promised but it was very helpful in selling the house.

I would recommend either.  We do our own painting though, and have not bought wall to wall carpet in a long time.  Good luck with the rest of your buying process!

  • We used Jason Boni at Guardian Home Inspection at the recommendation of another nestie. He actually ended up doing 2 inspections for us as the first house we offered on ended up having MAJOR issues. He was extremely thorough and easy to work with.
  • We also used VB Inspect for our home puchase back in 2004. (We've moved since into new construction) They were awesome and I'd recommend them to anyone. Very thorough, very  prompt with the report and worked easily with our realtor.

We did our own painting, but if you go into paint stores like Sherwin Williams, you can ask them for recommendations for painters, and there are often lots of business cards for painters on their cork board for customers to contact.

For carpeting and flooring, our new construction used Rusmer Carpet One and we were very pleased with them. We also used them for new carpet for our home in 2004 and were happy with them then too.

  • Congrats! What part of the city? I can recommend a painter, but he's in the east and I don't know how far he travels.

We also used Rusmor for our flooring (we had no choice, but we were satisfied with them). We got carpet and engineered hardwood through them. We used Home Depot for outdoor carpet on our enclosed porch before we sold our old house. It worked out fine in the end, but we were being way overcharged for the job before I challenged the manager on it.

Ditto, I used him based on a recommendation from another nestie as well.

  • We used All Tech twice and were very happy with them.  http://www.alltechhomeinspections.com/  Tom is the owner and did both of our inspections.

We used Jason twice - I think I was the one who referred him to others!  He was very thorough, and offered additional testing that some other inspectors did not include in their package at the time (I think it was pest and radon - although this was 6 years ago).

  • Thanks everyone!  I wish we could do the painting ourselves but we need to have the 2-story foyer and ceiling done and I really don't want DH climbing up that high.
