Cancer vs Baking Soda

My future FIL just sent me an email talking about digesting baking soda with maple syrup to combat certain cancers. Talks about how our bodies are too acidic (which apparently cancer loves) and using baking soda (alkaline) can stop and reverse cancer.

Just curious if anyone has heard anything about this? My boss has also brought up our bodies being too acidic and that is why her 16 year old son has colitis (which they haven't gotten controlled yet and it has been 6-7 months since first going to the doctor [poor guy]).

Re: Cancer vs Baking Soda

  • Oh boy... ok.. Uhh.. Old wive's tale with a little truth?

Maintaining a balanced pH in your body is important, and things like diet, stress, etc can adversely affect that. Baking soda is a very weak base so.. it really wouldn't do much other than taste gross and relieve a small stomach ache from time to time. It's not a fix for a bad diet.

If you want to know what foods will help keep your pH level balanced, look towards seaweed, algae, and green vegetables. They are alkaline-forming and thus help regulate pH in your body.

There are a lot of different correlations with foods/stress/pollution/age/weight/disease/etc and cancers. Ultimately all you can do is keep an active lifestyle and focus on eating whole foods that are non-GMO and organic.

  • I hope I didn't give you the impression that I was advocating it. I just thought it to be interesting but not interesting enough to go changing my diet and adding baking soda to it haha. Although, anything, in my opinion, is better than chemo and radiation. So if I happen to get cancer in my digestive tract someday, I might try it and see, who knows.

  • Our bodies have their own way of maintaining hemeostasis. If our pH is off our bodies deal with it. As long as you take care of yourself, your body is a pretty amazing thing.

Also - studies don't show baking soda to be effective. At all. It's been done.

  • No, there is no evidence of baking soda curing any cancer. There are some websites promoting it. But, there is no report of any double blind study trial results. If anyone claims that the treatment works, he must come up with properly audited trial results.
