Frequent Flyers

DH has decided we are flying to Orlando for our Disney trip in January.  I have never flown before, and I am absolutely terrified of stepping foot on a plane.  Any tips for a freaked out first time flyer?

Re: Frequent Flyers

  • Don't make your first trip a 9 hour flight to England like I did :o) It's really not that bad...you just can't worry about it or think about it too much. Be sure to take a book that you can be interested in, an IPod, etc....that will pass the time...

  • I second Heather's suggestion.  Take a book.  Or two. I had the last Harry Potter book on the way to Rome and finished it.  Bring some earphones so you can watch the movie.  And a neck pillow if you want to nap and are stuck in the middle of the plane.
  • If you are freaked out about potential danger it's far more dangerous for you to drive to Orlando than to fly.

I know it's safer, but I like keeping my feet on the ground. Smile  My grandmother flew to more than 30 different countries in her life, and told me she only had one terrible flight.  Thankfully, it's only a 90 minute flight from Birmingham.

  • I'd avoid drinking to calm yourself down.  I think that would only escalate the problem.  90 minutes sounds better than 7 hours for us!  We're breaking up the trip at DH's parents, but gracious!
  • Agreeing with the PP's take something to occupy you.  We flew from B'ham to Orlando this summer and it was a quick and painless flight.  It didn't feel like we were in the air very long at all.
  • girl...it is fun to fly! and plus...it puts you in disney so much quicker, faster, and safer than driving! we were there in under 4 hours (we had a connection in atl)... :)
  • i felt the same way before my first flight. it was funny because i didn't even realize the plane was moving until i looked out the window and saw the ground moving. trust me, it's not so bad..just take something to keep you occupied if you're worried about it. books, mp3 player, headphones, puzzles..

Yeah, I'm one who likes to keep my feet on the ground too, I'm terribly afraid of heights but somehow it's different for me flying.
  • Also if you get any kind of motion sickness take some dramamine.  Also some gum to pop your ears.

My suggestion is to just talk to your husband as you are about to take off and through that whole process, you won't even realize you took off.

I fly a lot for work and it doesn't phase me anymore.  I don't even remember the first time I flew to tell you the truth.  But you will be fine.  And 90 min is nothing for a flight, by the time you're in the air, they do the service (for drinks) it feels like it just flew right by (no pun intended).

  • I have no advice to share... lol... I am ridiculously terrified of flying myself. I've never had a bad experience on a plane, but I'm with you, I like having my feet on the ground. I'm sure I'll fly again, but I'm not looking forward to it, lol.
  • I love to fly!  Ditto on everyone else with bringing something to keep you occupied.  A book, talk to your hubby...

Also, I know it's against the whole point, but I always completely ignore the little speech at the beginning about how to fasten your seat belt and what to do in an emergency.  If you're worried, I would completely ignore that too.

  • Ditto pps!  :)

The only thing I could think to add is that there will be a lot of sounds during takeoff and landing (sometimes loud depending on the size of the plane), but they are totally normal.  Don't get worried about it, just relax and keep your mind occupied!

  • All this flying talk makes me think of the last scene in Say Anything
  • I fly lots. Don't sweat it. Like everyone else said, just take a good magazine, iPod or book and you'll be set. Start reading as soon as you're in your seat and you won't even notice you've taken off.

  • I love to fly!!!  DH was petrified of flying though so he went to sleep as soon as we boarded and he didn't wake up until the plane landed.  I would take a book, and bring some gum to chew because your ears pop.  I would also take a jacket- sometimes it is burning up on the plane and sometimes it is freezing.

You will be fine.  I hope you have fun on your trip
