Help!! My cat has ROUNDworm :(

I just found out that my kitten has roundworm.

Does the liquid you put in food really kill it?

How do I know if I have it or not? The kitten lives in my room and sleeps with me. I keep her box very clean. I usually scoop her poop out of the box with a paper towel or kleenex, flush it down the toilet and wash my hand immediately.

My vet said I can pick up something topical at their office?

How long before the medicine kills it?

Thanks so much!

  • round worms are really common in kittens and easily treated. If your vet gave you meds I would trust it. I can't tell what medications you are talking about based on your description. Keeping the litterbox clean and washing your hands is always a good idea for your health and your cats.

Yeah I agree I'm OCD and always cleaning the box. The med is called Sure Shot.

Would I know if I contrated it? I'm scared lol

  • Just to be clear how do you know your cat has roundworms? Because the way you are talking it is as if you have not seen a vet and had them diagnose your cat?  I highly recommend taking a poop sample to the vet and having a professional read the fecal float.  There is a very good possibility that there are more than just roundworms in there.  Some worms, like hookworms for example, may not show up in a fecal reading but can be deadly to a young kitten.  For that reason alone I would not use the over the counter product you have described as it appears to only be effective against roundworms.  There are plenty of good, safe, and cheap options out there to take care of your kittens worm problem but I think its time you talk to your vet.

If you maintain proper hygiene (which you say you are OCD about) the likely hood of you getting a roundworm is very very slim.  You have to eat some of your kitten's feces to get a roundworm.  So wash your hands after touching her poop and before you eat and you should be ok.

Ohh I did take her to the vet this past Sunday with a sample. They tested it and told me I could pick up a topical med. I guess I was just curious about the liquid one....if anyone has ever u0esd it

  • I highly recommend getting a different product that is more broad spectrum. The topical they are recommending, if I am guessing correctly what it is, is a great product. There is another OTC product that is more effective broad spectrum as well.

  • As a side note, flushing paper towels and clumped cat waste down the toilet is really bad for your plumbing (even if it's the flushable kind).

  • The brand I ended up getting through my vet is called Profender. It seems to have some great reviews.

A little off topic, but ew! Go get a litter scoop so you're not reaching into the box to pick up poop, and dump it in a plastic bag or other litter disposal container to put straight into the trash.

Otherwise, ditto PPs to trust and use whatever your vet gave you.

Ew! What? I find the scoopers grosser. I have used scoopers before and if the poop is soft it sticks to it. Totally gross! I use enough toilet paper that I am not touching it!!! Sometimes I do throw it in the trash but a lot of times I flush it down the toilet.
