We bought a leather sectional before we knew we were going to adopt cats. They don't scratch it, but it has millions of holes just from jumping around or falling off. They have become more calm but it's still going to happen from time to time.
I've heard microfiber is more pet friendly, but I really prefer something more fashionable. I tend to like Pottery Barn, but find their couches too plain for my style. I also like Restoration Hardware (especially their new tufted collection, but don't want to spend that much) as well as West Elm, Crate and Barrel, and other stores like that. I like leather because I found it easier than fabric to wipe clean when friends spill a drink, and I tend to worry about things like that.
I'd appreciate any recommendations on fabrics, specific couches, etc. Thanks!
Re: Pet-Friendly/Stylish Furniture
i tend to hate microfiber furniture. it seems cheap to me, and i don't feel like it wears well over the years.
i'd go with a stronger woven fabric, and perhaps something with a very slight pattern or 'grain' in the fabric so that you don't see the tiny marks.
i dont know much about it but the 'woven textural poly' fabric kinda seems right...

I purchased chairs & a sofa from Ikea before we got cats. We had no cats, now we have 3, LOL. They like to climb, and scratch on the furniture. Ikea's fabrics are a very hearty, heavy cotton, and their covers come off and are machine washable. I even have white (Horrors!, but my youngest child is 18). I've washed the covers with no ill effects.
The cat's "scratchings" create a bit of a snag, but it actually handles this much better than I ever would have anticipated. I have a very expensive pseudo velvet on my sectional in my family room that is ruined from cat scratches.........but the Ikea cotton is going strong. The nice thing about Ikea is that you can get different colored covers or replacements for under $150 directly from them.
We have a leather covered chair in our bedroom that is getting teeny tiny holes from the cat's nails...........I put an afghan throw over it, and that solved that problem
Good luck.
We have this sofa from Haverty's in the smaller configuration.

It's a microfiber fabric, but in a herringbone pattern. It's subtle, but gives is a texture, unlike regular microfiber furniture that can look almost slick. I love it, and it's very easy to care for with a dog and two cats.
