Ringworm question

Hi all.  I don't normally post here, but I have a quick question for all of you experts.

We recently got a Bull Terrier puppy.  She's 10 weeks old today and has ringworm.  We knew she had it when we picked her up last week and agreed to treat her at home.  The treatment we were told was the antifungal cream and a daily bath with Head and Shoulders.  Some spots seem to be healing slowly, but we also seem to be finding new ones.  I was mostly wondering 2 things.  1)  Does this seem to make sense?  2) Is there anything else you would recommend?

She does have an appointment at our vet next week for vaccines, but I didn't know if there was anything else we should be doing in the mean time.  Thanks so much!

Re: Ringworm question

  • Is the ringworm vet diagnosed? Other conditions can cause similar lesions, so if you don't see improvement get a vet's opinion if you haven't already.

Yes, the treatment recommended makes sense for ringworm. Daily baths may irritate the skin, especially if you're drying with a blow dryer, so watch for that and go to every other day if needed. Fighting ringworm is something done over many weeks, not just a few days. Realistically it may be 6 or so weeks before it's gone.

Also, the fungus that causes ringworm is very persistent and easily transferred to humans. It can be picked up again and again in the environment, so vacuum frequently, clean grooming items with bleach, and get rid of or sterilize bedding used during an outbreak. Don't let children handle the pup until clear. I would also keep him off the furniture completely, or better yet, confine to a hard floor area until it's under control.

  • I agree with everything pp said. Please inform your vet of your concerns with ring worm before taking the pet in and also min. all contact with anyone that does not need to be touching the pet until you have a diagnosis. Your vet can do a fungal culture for you and give you meds. to treat the puppy in the mean time that may help to speed  the process of getting rid of it.
