Dog with Diabetes :(

I found out my maltese has diabetes about a month ago. He has been diagnosed and he is on the proper insulin with a special diet food. He seems to be doing fine, but I hate that it might be just me wishful thinking. Does anyone else here have a dog with diabetes? I guess I'm just looking for advice on the whole situation. My vet isn't the most considerate individual, hes matter of fact, runs by the numbers and prognosis and thats about it. How do I know that my dog is doing well? What can i expect in the near future. He's about 7 years old now, does he have many years left? Is there anything else I can be doing besides the new diet and meds to make him better, or at least more back to normal? Thanks in advance for your help and comments.

Re: Dog with Diabetes :(

  • I don't have experience with diabetic dogs, but I just wanted to say that if you aren't happy with your vet, definitely look into finding a new one.  I love my vet and trust him, and I find it really makes a difference for me and my dogs.  I hope someone with experience can chime in.  T&Ps to you and your pup.

  • I don't have experience with a diabetic dog but I did have a cat with diabetes. She was diagnosed when she was about 7 years old. I was told she would probably live 3 years average. I had to put her down at the ripe old age of 19. She was on insulin twice a day. Looking at her you could not tell anything was wrong with her. She lived a happy, normal, lazy spolied life. I could always tell when her meds needed to be regulated because she would either start to lose weight or urinate a lot more. Once it was regulated she would go months living a normal life. Good luck with your pup!!
