*CTbride* Question about your HM
C and I are looking into going to Australia (and N.Z.) in the future, but I'm not sure how to start planning it. Would you mind sharing details about your trip and/or how you planned it? You can email me if you'd prefer...

Re: *CTbride* Question about your HM
well, here's a mini breakdown of how the planning went and if you want more specifics on anything, i'd be happy to share:
1) i started at tripadvisor.com and australia.com...this is where i gathered info regarding the different areas of the country and which were most appealing to us based on the terrain, activities, ect. australia.com has different packages which i used as a rough model to get an idea for how much time was appropriate at each place, how much we could fit into our two weeks, how much we should expect to spend, ect. So from that research we decided to include Sydney, the outback, rainforest, and beach/great barrier reef. We're really not getting to see any of the west coast but these are the typical attractions australia offers so we wanted to make sure we got to them.
2) then i went ot a travel agent (two, actually) who put together a package including air, hotels, and transfers. After i picked my chin off the ground, i decided we would not be using a travel agent.
3) return to tripadvisor.com and purpleroofs.com to research hotels/b+b's with reasonable prices in each of the 4 places we wanted to visit (the actual city names are Sydney, Uluru, Cairns, Kewarra, and Mission Beach). That was very sucessful and we cut our quote from the travel agents in half. We purchased our flights through qantas.com when they were running a special (3 free in-country flights with the purchase of a flight from the US...i think they have this special often). I was also able to reasearch a lot of the activities (horseback riding, snorkeling, guided hikes, ect) through tripadvisor - i love that website - and we booked about 1/2 of our "extras" ahead of time....the other 1/2 are really weather dependent so we opted to book them when we're there.
And thats about it.....it was definitely a lot of work tracking down quotes and researching a number of different places to stay, but this way we have a vacation tailored perfectly to our interests.
as i said above, let me know if you'd like specifics on anything or any of the specific places. When are you thinking about going?

Wow! Thanks for all the info. I haven't really looked into it, but I know how planning can go and wanted to be prepared for a huge ordeal. Your advice will be a great starting point. We also want to go to NZ (my mom's family lived there for awhile when she was young), so that will add to the itinerary.
We would love to go before TTC, but we aren't sure exactly. I think Spring or Fall would be nice. Depending on housing/moving stuff, perhaps Fall of 2009, then come back, start my last year of school and start ttc. I'll keep you posted (especially if I have questions).
