Sunroom?

I'm wondering what would go into turning our huge deck (runs the entire length of our house and is probably about half the width) into a sunroom. Is it as usable as any other room- are they drafty?  We live in Southern California but I had a sunroom in my apt when I lived in Nashville.  I figure that we could make it into two rooms- one a play room and the other would be "my" room for sewing/knitting/writing with a mostly transparent wall between so I could keep an eye on the kids.

It would be a crying shame to lose the outdoor space but it would keep us happy in this house for several more years which we want to stay in for so many reasons (we live on a compound with my parents and love it).  We can't increase our square footage for a variety of issues (unless our area gets sewer hook ups and we can abandon the septic).  How much does such a thing cost?

Re: Sunroom?

  • I don't know what this would cost, but are you thinking of doing this yourself or hiring someone?

I think what you are talking about is what we in the midwest call a "3 season room". Warm/nice enough for all seasons except our harsh winters. Around here there are lower walls, with convertible screens/glass windows for the top.

Is your deck a wooden one, or concrete patio? I think you'd need concrete to sustain the weight of whatever you are putting up, even if you just want a wooden frame (versus metal) and screens.

I find everything I want by searching the internet. I'd search for "DIY sun room", or something like that. Often you can come across plans you can download, or purchase online with all the specifics. Because you live in Southern CA, there may also be far more companies that can do this in your area as well, more than around here.

FWIW, I plan on doing something similar, we have a concrete patio behind our house, but I'm more interested in one with a slightly slanting roof and wooden beams on the 4 corners to hold it up, versus the screens/windows. Something more permanent like that is out of our budget.

    Good luck.

  • The idea is very innovative one and you would enjoy the new room very much as much as your family but I think it would be high in cost because you would need to hire a professional person for the purpose. I think you should work out the plan yourself and see how much you can do yourself, thus, minimizing the task for the designer and thereby, the costs as well. All I would like to say is best of luck for your future endeavors.
