Tax Vent

I don't typically express my opinion about this type of stuff but this time I'm really annoyed.

H and I had our taxes done last Friday and we are getting a decent return, not exactly what we were hoping for, but it is a good chunk of change. We have a 'friend', we'll call him T, that doesn't completely have his life together yet. He's young (20) but he has a child so he should be on the road to getting sh*t figured out. Well T had his taxes done last week as well and he is getting back double what H and I are!! You know what he grossed last year? LESS than $10,000! He worked two jobs all of last year, both for about 3-4 months each (if that even) and spent the rest of his time playing video games and bumming off his parents. I know it's the system and blah, blah, blah but when I have to sit here and listen to how you are going to spend your tax return on more useless sh*t, rather than move out of your parents house and get your life together (or take proper care of your child), it really chaps my ass! I work damn hard for my money and it is complete BS that some bum gets to benefit from it!

Re: Tax Vent

  • Trust me, I feel the same way. I worked with a girl (several, actually, at different times) who was a "single parent" and got back a TON of money. Funny how you LIVE with your children's father and are engaged but don't plan to get married till you can't work the system anymore.

    Gross.

  • Ugh thats annoying...I don't really understand how it all works, but it seems strange that he'd be getting so much back if he only made $10,000! It's crappy that he's going to spend it on useless stuff instead of moving out...but I guess that his (stupid) decision.

In the past couple of years, I've owed money because of the catering company I work for. They don't take out taxes at all so the money I'd get back from my "regular" job gets subtracted against the $ I owe for the catering company work...I owed a few hundred $ last year...it sucked! I used to look forward to tax time for a decent return..now I just wait to see how much I have to pay :(

  • I don't even like to think about all the people working the system, or just how much money I don't take home because of these lovely programs.  Not to say that there isn't a need for some people, but in my experience there are far many more people just taking a handout because they can.  And what incentive is there to better yourself & your situation when you are getting free money from the government?

I'll get off my soap box now =P

  • It makes me really angry too. I know there are people that need the help but there are A LOT of people who are just working the system. I know a girl who said its the government's responsibility to help her take care of her baby. Uh no the government is not your baby's dad. It is not our responsibility to take care of your baby. I have my own baby to take care of!

I've been watching a lot of daytime TV since I'm home on maternity leave. There's one commercial that they play all of the time for a free government subsidized cell phone. It's a free phone, 250 free minutes and 250 free texts a month. I understand the need for a phone for emergencies but why do you need to text?!

  • This ish really pisses me off.  For people that make below a certain amount of money, they actually get more taxes back than they even pay in because of the "earned income credit".   On the one hand, I'd rather the people working get the extra money, than people sitting around not doing anything, popping out babies, and collecting welfare checks.  But on the other hand, there are those deadbeats that work just enough to collect the cash and then spend it on useless sh!t.

Whatever... it's really annoying and I can't stand it, but there's not really anything I can do about it so I try not to get so angry about it.  I figure we make enough money so that we're comfortable and I should just focus on what I can control instead of what I can't.  :-/

  • I feel the same way and it really drives me up the way.

My own rant is : getting married really screwed up my tax return..I always get a good chunk back because I was technically single with a house and making a catholic school salary, well now I add my H and it kinda messes that up haah. We still get a good chunk but nearly as much when they considered me working poor. We played around with it to figure out the best but no matter what being married still gets me less haah

  • He might be getting so much back because he didn't work the whole year.  When they take taxes out they assume you are going to get paid that amount each pay check for the year?  Really I hope that is the reason though.  It would be BS if he is getting more back beacause he has a kid.  I hate people that take advantage of the system.  It is no fair.  DH and I are going to owe this year...which is a bummer.  For the first time ever I don't get to do anything with tax return money!

  • Taxes make me grumpy...We're still waiting to see what the damage is going to be--good or bad. I'm waiting for H's w-2 to finish our taxes. I hate that we have to pay to file taxes, potentially pay more taxes and support people who may not even need it. I need my own money...we aren't extravanagant, yet we pay to keep somebody on their butt...

Makes me grumpy just thinking about it...

  • H & I haven't done our taxes yet but I REALLY hope we don't owe! Espeically since we both contribute the max or close to.

I kind of had a similar rant the other night. H & I are both college educated with decent jobs and we can't afford a house or kids (YAYY student loan debt!). Meanwhile people get free childcare at my work from the state, but have crazy expensive cars and much nicer clothes than me and don't have to work because they've figured out how to work the system. It's so aggrivating!

  • I know how you feel! We have a parent where I work (I work at a preschool) she is 25 has 4 year old twins and a 2 year old. Her mother bought her a new car and a 4 bedroom house. This mother does not work at all! We also have another parent who gets so much assistance with her bills from the government, yet she doesn't work and has no interest in working.

It pisses me off, but I look at it like this; I work hard for what I have and I can be proud that I work to pay for the roof over my head, my car and anything else my heart desires. Plus people like that look lazy.
