Weight loss or toning?

Help!  I have been overweight pretty much since I was little and am finally really trying to lose weight.  I currently wear a size 10-12 but I want to wear an 8 by May.  I'm carefully monitoring my calories and working out but I have only lost 2 pounds this week and went out for sushi ONCE and gained it all back!  Do you have any super cheap/easy/fast food ideas or any good 30-minute exercise routines (I can only get to the gym 3 days a week for half an hour).  Even if I can't drop weight I want my belly to just go away!  I haven't worn a bathing suit in years (and I'm only 21).

Re: Weight loss or toning?

  • I'm going to link you to what i posted to another question.... it might help you understand the relationship of food to your body/energy/weight loss.

    http://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/71606414.aspx

one night of sushi is NOT going to make you unravel your hard work.  At worst, you might have used too much soy sauce and upped your sodium intake, which made you retain a bit more water.  Also, depending on the time of day you weigh yourself, you might weigh more/less.  your body can fluctuate a few pounds either way day by day.

STOP looking at the scale. that number tells you VERY LITTLE information.  concentrate on how you feel, and how your body is reacting to your lifestyle changes.  eat fresher ingredients. cook food ahead of time so that you have ready-made healthy snacks and meals. learn more about foods that are 'nutrient dense'.

as far as activity -- i enjoy using the niketrainingclub app for iphone. it has some awesome short workouts that you can do at home. i typically do 2 of the 15 minute workouts.

seriously read my response to the other thread. weight loss is more than just seeing smaller numbers on a scale.  i have weighed the same for YEARS, yet have been different clothing sizes due to my muscle tone vs fat content.  if your goal is to look good in bathing suit - concentrate on cardio and toning, and choosing better foods. your body will slowly change to hold more muscle and deplete fat stores....which means you might see a smaller waistline, but higher number on the scale.

good luck! May is a great goal....you should definitely see at least some improvement by then!

  • Cardio is key! Even on days you can't make it to the gym try to at least go for a walk. Try taking the stairs once a day in replace of an elevator (if that even applies to you) and then twice a day etc. GOOD LUCK! I just had my first baby and now I'm fighting off the weight and I've noticed that when I'm at the gym its all mind over matter. I tell myself I can't when I really can, so STAY POSITIVE BECAUSE YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!
  • First off, congrats on taking charge and making the decision to lose weight. I was chubby for as long as I can remember and lost the weight (and kept it off!) a few years ago. As the PP said, you can't focus on the number on the scale. Sounds like a cliche, but it's true. When I watch the scale every day, it only stresses me out more, then I stress eat and it has the opposite effect. I also find that my weight will remain steady or even go up, but I still lose inches.

As for exercise, if you only have a short amount of time, I recommend running (either at the gym or outside) or Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred. I normally run to keep in shape, but took a 4 month break due to surgery. Needless to say, my body took the break a little too freely. I did the 30DS for a month straight and saw great results. If you don't mind running, try the Couch to 5k challenge. I run a 1/2 marathon every year and train year round for it. Races provide a tangible goal.

Remember that a healthy diet is important, too. I'm not a fan of cutting out all junk food or desserts, but make sure that you only eat it in moderation. If you're craving something, go for it. But do you really need that that 2 scoop ice cream sundae or will one scoop do it?

Weight loss won't happen overnight, you have to stick with it. Good luck and keep us posted!

  • Shedding weight is a slow-going plan, however with frequent modifications with short increases in the method you try eating, and you?ll very soon be placed on your path to a healthy and balanced unique body shape
