US travel ideas?
My husband gets a free companion flight from his business credit card, so we are starting to plan a trip for this year. The catch is that is has to be in the continental 48 states.
I really want to go someplace warm and relaxing with a great beach. Or some place with great food. Priorities! Anyway, anyone have and good vacation recommendations in the US?

- budget is in the air at this point until we figure out where we want to go. Obviously, the least expensive the best. Just trying to get ideas. Maybe about $150-200/ night.... Not really sure what would be realistic yet.
Savannah, GA. Delta flies into the Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport. It is such a relaxing and romantic city. Tybee Island and Hilton Head are near by with beaches. Savannah has become a huge destination for foodies. There are so many great places to eat. Most times of the year, you should easily be able to find a hotel for $150 a night.
I would avoid the days around St Patrick's day. It's a huge celebration here. Think mini Mardi Gras. It would be hard to find a room near here for that time right now, any way.
Never lucky enough to go the Hamptons but Boston was WAY too cold for me to swim in, even in August. Maybe I'm a wimp?
I'm from Phoenix and can't swim if the water isn't in the 80s. I go home every year to the Jersey Shore and just cannot get in! your body just gets acclimatized. However, it looks like the OP is from Michigan, so I imagine 78 degree water might not feel so bad!

Went on a business trip to Charleston SC a few years ago and LOVED it. It's got a lot of history, cobblestone streets, and my husband (fiance back then) also enjoyed it (we both like history)
It's romantic, has the best restaurants in any metro area I've visited. I mean EVERY restaurant was like a 4 star restaurant.
We stayed at the French Quarter Inn, really romantic. Gas fireplaces in some of the rooms, they greet you with champagne when you arrive, have a wonderful breakfast buffet in the lobby in the morning, cookies in the afternoon, wine and cheese at night. The "market" is right in front of the hotel with a lot of vendors
We were there in February, and the pansies were blooming. In the summer there's the beaches.
For 5 days, California is too far. I lived near Boston, it's lovely and lots of history as well.
In Maine, there are lots of great beaches in the summer. But any New England area is going to be really expensive in the summer because their "season" is so short.
You can get non-stop flights to both Boston and Charleston.
People LOVE Sand Diego. I'm not a huge fan personally, but there is a lot to do there miles of beaches. The Zoo is not to be missed! I'd definitely chose SD over LA (if you're thinking about So Cal).
I guess a lot of it depends on if you're looking for city and culture or just an empty beach to lay on. We had a great trip to Cape San Blas Florida one year (there's NOTHING there accept a big empty beach).
On the East coast I can swim in the water as far north as the Carolinas, after that I wimp out. But I have seen people swimming in the ocean in Maine. Like PP said, I LOVE Savannah. It's a beautiful city (but it's not very "beachy"). The area around Cape Hatteras is lovely and peaceful too.
Overall, on the east coast you'll get warmer water, but hot humid weather. On the west coast the water is a little cooler but there's virtually no humidity or rain in summer. Once you leave SoCal the pacific get's really cold. Some people do swim without wet suits here in Santa Cruz (another popular beach vacation spot) but I think they're crazy!
Anywhere on the Emerald Coast in Florida (Destin, Okaloosa Island, Fort Walton Beach, Panama City Beach). We are planning a trip there now.
The beaches there can't be beat, IMO. The sand is snow white & powder soft. There are lots of great places to eat, especially if you like seafood. If you want to shop there is a large outlet mall in Destin, plenty of bars, too. Lots of activities such as deep sea fishing, jet skiing, snorkeling, etc... Lodging is reasonably priced. There are chain hotels as well as many condos for rent by owner, many of which are cheaper & nicer than the hotels. Check out www.vrbo.com.
