Carpet or Hardwood Floors after renovations
I'm so torn.
We are buying a 1950's house that has hardwood floors throughout the entire house. It's one level with 3 bedrooms. I've always grownup with carpet in my bedrooms and there is something about the comfort with that. However these wood floors are so beautiful I feel guilty covering them up. All we would have to do is have them refinished.
I'm not sure what makes more sense. Keeping the entire house all hardwood? Or Hardwood in the living room/dinning room/ hallways and carpet in the bedrooms?
Help.
Re: Carpet or Hardwood Floors after renovations
I vote for hardwood everywhere!
Rug in the bedroom if you want/need to.
I love the ease of cleaning hardwood! Yay for Swiffer!
Add cozy area rugs in halls or bedrooms, as needed.
This.
Definately this.
I agree with the hardwood throughout.
Having purchased and sold homes, plus rented, you have no idea of the resale value of hardwood floors. If the home has them under the carpet, it's really not that hard to refinish them.
Our home has hardwood floors throughout, but when we bought it there was carpeting in the bedrooms. After my husband moved in with us, we moved the bedrooms around. I pulled back the carpet in the room that is now ours, and it was a few hours of work to tear out the carpet, take off the stud-edges and the moldings. It was obviously a child's bedroom previously, because there were multiple scratches in the very middle of the room, like a kid having a tantrum made when they were locked in their room, LOL. The rest of the floor had some wear & tear issues.
I purchased a bottle of "Orange Glo", made for hardwood floor improvement at the hardware store and used it according to directions on the bottle. It's like a wax, not varnish. It made the floors look wonderful, and they stay that way for a long time with simple sweeping/dusting. Our king sized bed covers the area with the scratches, I got a couple of large rugs for next to the bed, and it looks like a wonderful hardwood floor.
I can't wait until I can afford to re-do my kitchen, because I'm sure there is hardwood under the sheet of linoleum in there now.
I, like you, grew up with carpet and have always said that I preferred carpet but now that I have kids, I would trade in my carpet for hardwood. Carpet is so much harder to keep clean than hardwood floors. It was never a question when it was just me and DH that I preferred carpet. But 2 kids later, we are actually very seriously considering replacing our carpet for hardwood floors.
Hard wood through out.
You can always put an area rug down.
