Recommend your mattress

Hopefully this is the right board to post this on. If not, I apologize.

We are looking into buying a new mattress and I would love opinions. We are thinking of getting a regular (innerspring) mattress, but with all of the choices, I don't even know where to begin. Queen sized.

Long ago I used to have a double-sided pillow top, but I can't remember if it was Sealy or Serta and I can't find a double-sided pillow top now (so that it can be flipped). It was a great mattress, though. Firm, yet soft and cozy.

I have thought about memory foam, but I am hesitant because I heard that they hold your body heat and you can get pretty hot during the night. That isn't something I would want.

Recommendations?

TIA

Re: Recommend your mattress

  • I just bought new mattresses this past summer. We went with a locally-owned mattress manufacturer, not a national brand.

The sales associate told us that the national brands no longer make double sided pillow tops (so no flipping).

Try a local company that manufactures their own product, to find a double-sided pillow top.

  • I have a memory foam bed, and my 3yr old does as well.  I didn't think I would like it at first because it does feel more firm then a pillowtop, but I LOVE it now!  I lay down on a regular mattress and there is no comparison.  I don't have an issue with overheating at night.  Hope this helps!
  • We recently bought the Simmons Beautyrest Anniversary Silvia Extra Firm mattress.  Best sleep ever.
sometimes all you really need in life is a pink wig.
  • I don't remember the exact name of the mattress, but we got it at bon ton on black friday. =P

I think it was the serta posturepedic gel series.  all i remember is that it did have a pillowtop on it (no flipping....but you CAN always rotate the mattress 180degrees), and that it had this 'cooling' technology so that the bed cools down and doesnt hold as much heat.  i was sold on this since hubby is such a warm body and i like to be cool when i sleep. ours is a queen size as well.

the mattress is fairly firm with that pillowy top, so that its still cozy. i havent had one problem sleeping on it =)

  • When we bought our last house, we splurged on a king tempurpedic memory foam.  I will never sleep on a regular pillowtop again!  If you're hesitant, pick up a memory foam topper.  It won't give you the full feel but you can gauge the body heat issue and see if it's a problem for you. My H is a hot sleeper and is very happy with ours.

  • My sister bought one of those expensive adjustable Tempurpedics and says she's not impressed. If I'm shelling out $5000+ for a mattress, it better do the laundry for me too!

DH and I bought a big expensive king pillow top when we were dating. WORST IDEA EVER. Within about a year, the pillow top was sinking in, no matter how many times we turned it.

This past Monday, we went to Macy's and bought a Simmons Beautyrest in Firm. It has a 10 year warranty, didn't break the bank and hopefully we can stop waking up sore!! I figure if it's too firm, we can always buy a topper for it. GL!
