Valentine's Day

What's everyone doing for Valentine's Day?  Will you be eating out, or will you be cooking a homecooked meal?  If you're cooking, what are you making?  Looking for some inspiration - I'm thinking we're going to grill some ribeyes, but I'm not sure what else I'm going to make to go with the ribeyes.

Re: Valentine's Day

  • We stay in - restaurants are too crowded.  Even though I am happy to make DH a cake from scratch, for Valentine's Day he always requests a boxed yellow cake with canned chocolate icing - just like he had as a kid.

For dinner I am making him Rachael Ray's beer, beef, and cheddar pie, with some tweaks (i halve the meat but keep the vegetables the same).

  • Valentine's Day I have to work so we are getting take out from our favorite local Italian restaurant afterwards.  Earlier in the week I'm making Italian sausage w/heart shaped pasta and I'm going to bake M&M bars.

  • I'm thinking of making heart shaped ravioli, or shaped pasta if I don't end up with the time to make ravioli from scratch.  We might end up celebrating Friday or Saturday, though, when we have some more time.

  • DH and I are going out to lunch and we're cooking together for dinner.  Still haven't decided on exact menu yet though.

  • I LOVE to cook, so I asked him what he wanted for V Day. He asked for filet mignon, so I'm getting it at Aldi's (I think $3.00 or so per filet) or Omaha Steaks, (more $, but better). I have a pan that I sear them in, then place in the oven and cook to medium rare.

He likes baked potatoes with "the works", a veggie, maybe I'll make a special salad. Dessert I haven't figured out yet.

  • He works that evening, a 4pm - 2am shift.  I'd like to make a somewhat fancy dessert the day before that we can eat after lunch and he can take some to work with dinner.  I haven't decided what though.  He doesn't like cake and I do and I don't like pie crust and he does.  So I want to find something with a graham cracker crust since that is something we both like.  I was thinking about cheesecake but I've never made one before and they're kind of complicated plus, I don't really have the equipment to beat cream cheese with powdered sugar until smooth.  So I'm still thinking!  I have a couple days!

Maybe we'll go out for a nice lunch.  Or we'll celebrate the day before.

  • In the past few years since we bought our house we've done a nice dinner at home. This year my DH wanted to go out and since he is working on V-day we are going to go the night before to a nice place right near our house.  We've had a rough year so i guess he decided to cut me a break cooking

  • We usually stay in b/c we don't like to fight the restaurant crowds, but this year we're going out for an early dinner.  Last year, we stayed in & he cooked steak and lobster tails, grilled asparagus, roasted potatoes and creme brulee.  It was great!

This is almost what I have decided minus the lobster tail and the creme brulee.
