Paralyzed rabbit care tips?

Longshot--but does anyone have a paralyzed rabbit who could offer any tips to make care easier?  We're going to bring home a paralyzed rabbit from a rescue soon.  He will have a cart with wheels, and is healthy otherwise.  He can eat and go to the bathroom on his own, but may need diapers.

Re: Paralyzed rabbit care tips?

  • Wow, that's really great of you to adopt a special needs bunny!  I haven't dealt with any paralyzed rabbits, but the only thing I can think of is make sure the fur around his/her butt doesn't get too matted or dirty with urine or feces(this can be a problem even with healthy rabbits, and I imagine a diaper would make them more likely to have this problem). Good luck!
  • Thank you for your response.  So far he's not in a diaper, but that could change.  We're not sure.  I already learned how to give him a "butt bath" to keep him clean.   We will probably keep his fur shaved to keep him clean, too.  I'm just happy that he wants to live, so as long as he is otherwise healthy and happy we will help him stay clean and make sure he has what he needs.

  • I honestly don't know but there is a website called www.bunspace.com and there are forums on there for bunny care and someone may be able to help you! I believe some of the members have buns in the same condition.

  • Wow, bunspace has a ton of great information.  Thank you!  I just want to give this little guy the best chance.  He wants to live, so I am optimistic.

  • I think it's really awesome that you adopted him! Best of luck! Big Smile
  • Thank you all so much!

  • I'm a VERY old pestie, and rarely stop by anymore...

I have had many rabbits through out my lifetime, but none currently. :( My Dozer passed away in May of 2011 from what we believe was a severe seizure. I was un bunspace and LOVED it! I think what you are doing is incredible!

Anyway, I wanted to reply because your heart dog looks just like my Koda!! So awesome! Aren't they THE best?! Before Koda, I grew up with a dog that looked just like him.  Just had to say hello!! :)
