What is the serpent?

I would just like to know other peoples opinions on what they believe the serpent is. You would hear some people say it represents evil / badness, some say it represents knowledge that has been stolen from us (the druids), there are many different ideas of what people think it is.  Ireland is more seeped in serpent culture than anywhere else, its worth going into the national museum of Ireland (Free admission) and viewing the ancient artefacts and the intricacies that most of these objects have on them including many serpents, the Tara brooch is simple one to find the serpent symbol, others you will have to look for a long time before they start to slither out and become visible to your mind, similar to when you go into churches to view the symbolism they possess it takes awhile before you will start to notice the hidden in plain sight serpents etc.
