Took down porch...

So we recently took down our porch, which was out back covering a concrete slab. Now we are afraid that when it rains that water will pool on the concrete slab and leak into our finished basement! We have a waterproofing material on the walls in the basement to stop water from coming in but that might not stop it completely. Does anyone know if there is something we can put on the concrete that will help keep the water out?

Re: Took down porch...

  • You can get a sealer from your local hardware store - however, you have to apply it in dry conditions within a certain temperature range so it seals correctly.

Why is this particular wall of your basement any different than the others? I'm guessing you have more than one finished exterior basement wall, right? THis one should behave as the others do.

  • If the slab was poured correctly to begin with, it should have a slope to it so that the water will run off the slap away from the house. I'm going to assume that since it was covered with wood, water has been dripping down there the whole time. Stick a level on it and find out if the pitch is there. As you already know, water sitting by your house is never a good idea, not sure if a sealer is the only solution. If there's no pitch, call a mason and see if it can be re-topped.
