we're getting a puppy!

Trav's brother called us just after midnight on Saturday night/Sunday morning to let us know that his yellow lab just had a litter of NINE puppies! 6 girls and 3 boys. We immediately claimed a girl...  :-)   I'm psyched, we've wanted a dog for a while now.

Seeing as they were just born, we have a bit before we'll be getting her... but for now we're working on doggy-proofing the house (any suggestions), picking up the necessary supplies (including a crate since we plan to crate train her), and trying to figure out a name. The only one we've agreed on so far is Daisy. What's a good female yellow lab name?

Re: we're getting a puppy!

  • I love the names SUNNY, and Lola. :-)

To puppy proof the house, get a crate it will come in handy! We love the fact that our dog is crate trained. Also, I recommend Pet Enzyme to clean up the accidents. It is the BEST! You can find it at Pet Smart. Buy this big jug of it, it's soooooooo much cheaper in the long run.

Puppy gates, get them  to put one by the door so they can't run out, and also others for areas you won't want the puppy to get to w/o you being there. The small the area she has to run while you in the room the less likelyhood for accidents. :-) They will also come in handy when you have kidlets.

We just got a puppy not that long ago, so if you have any questions let me know.

  • yay for puppies! they are so cute. i've never really had a puppy (the dog we had when i was a kid came from the pound and i've never had one as an adult), so i don't really have any advice. to be honest i'm actually afraid of dogs and it takes me a while to get comfortable with them, even my friends' dogs.

i would like to say that i think daisy is a great name. Big Smile

  • That's so exciting!  I strongly support crate training.  My guy loves his crate.  All I have to say is "kennel up" and he runs right in.  The only other thing I highly reccommend is that as the puppy gets older 5-6 months only give her water outside. Do you have a fenced in yard?  The moment we moved the water bowl outside we never had to change a puppy pad again.  It's some association with the water and peeing...idk.  Of course now that they are adults the dogs get water inside the house, but as a puppy it worked miracles.  It could be rather difficult in snowy weather, I was in CA, so I'm not sure of the logisitics but it's worth a try.

  • thats so exciting! yay :)

the others gave good advice...i'm also a huge advocate for crate training, lilly would be an anxious wreck w/o her crate.  have fun and be sure to ask any questions you have when the little girl is in your arms!

ps- daisy is an adorable doggie name :)

  • A puppy! How adorable and snuggly. Everyone gave great advice so I will just say that Daisy is a great name. One of our kitties is named Daisy so I may be biased :-)
  • YAY FOR PUPPIES!!!
