kids and colds

Before dd started preschool in the fall she was home with me and didn't really get sick very often.  I know preschool is a breeding ground for all sorts of things but is it normal that dd has basically had a cold since they got back from Christmas break.  She gets to the point where she's almost better and then it all goes down hill again.

Is this just normal for preschool kid or should i call the pedi?  I just feel kind of silly about calling for a cold but I feel like she's had it forever.

Re: kids and colds

  • I feel like this happens to us every year, too.  Unless they're spiking a fever, or seem really, really miserable, I just assume it's a cold.  (or if they get a horrible sounding cough along with it that doesn't go away)  We're in the same boat with Liam right now; his nose is just a faucet and he has a cough that comes & goes every few weeks, but I think it's all just an ongoing cold (or one on top of another)

I hope she feels better soon!

  • Normal. The first winters that my kids were mobile at daycare they had a constant series of cold symptoms. Each year has been progressively better and they recover faster. Hugs!

This.  Keira's had a hacking cough on and off since November & Eamon's nose is so red and crusty I can't even clear it anymore.  Now and again they spike fevers and have to stay home but usually they are ok to go to school and reinfect everyone else around them.  And it comes back around to us too  Stick out tongue

That's the other thing.  I feel like I shouldn't send her to school and have her cough on everybody, but then she would have missed half the year!

  • yea, way normal. We had a long run of colds before and after EJ;s first birthday which was her first cold season being mobile (and in daycare). I thought we may die from the common cold it went on for so longWink
  • I'm so glad to hear everyone's responses and that an ongoing cold is "normal".  My ds has had one on and off since right before Christmas and just like others, he will seem to be getting better and then the cough returns.  The cough is worse at night.
