Am I Going To Have a Big Baby?

Obviously I'm happy to be having her any way I can get her, but I'd like to keep around the 7.5 pound range for the sake of my lady bits. I had my 32 week appointment today (32 weeks tomorrow) and my belly was measuring at 34/35 weeks so they did another ultrasound and checked my cervix. I'm still completely closed and that all looks good. So then we get to the ultrasound and I'm measuring about a day or two ahead of my due date which would make perfect sense. They also confirmed that it's really a girl so I can feel guilt free washing my girly stuff, she also takes after me and is very stubborn as we tried to get a good face shot and she kept her arm over her face. When they did the weight they said she was a little over 4 lbs, not alarming or bad but on the higher end. So, do I have a chance of her evening out and sticking closer to the 7.5 range or am I looking at a 9-10 pounder?

  • You definitely have a chance that she'll be around 7.5 lbs.  The estimations can be off for the belly measurement based on baby's position.  And the u/s measurement is still just an estimate as well.  I believe that the expected growth at this point is 1/2 a pound a week, so it will truly just depend on how far you get in your pregnancy.

FWIW - Kaitlyn "weighed" 4 lbs at my 32w u/s and was right on track with gaining 1/2 a pound a week. I was expecting an 8-9 pound baby, but had her at 36w, so she ended up being 6lb 4oz.

  • I wouldn't worry too much. Like Grey said, belly measurements greatly depend on the position of the baby. Ultrasound estimates can be off by pounds.

  • Cora was measuring around 5lbs at our 33 week ultrasound, and she was born at 37 weeks at 7 pounds.

  • I was measuring about a week ahead during my whole pregnancy last time. She was 1 lb at my 20 week A/S, estimated at 4 lbs at a 32 week scan.  I was a bit worried because I was 8 1/2 lbs at birth and DH was 11 lbs.  I ended up going to 41 weeks and she was 8 lbs 2 oz at birth, so a bit bigger than average but not huge.  Also, luckily for me she had a small head :)  Like pp have said, those estimates aren't always that accurate anyways.

  • Thanks ladies, I appreciate the reassurance. Whatever happens will happen and we're just thrilled we're having her. It's starting to feel real! I've been going back and forth with projects today while working at home and managed to get some baby things washed and her crib made up (minus skirt and breathable bumper). I'm just so stinking excited!!!

  • S was 2-3weeks ahead throughout both her measurements and my belly measurements. She was born at 39w5d at 8lbs and my lady bits survived. I was a bit concerned about her size at 35w when they estimated her at 6.5lbs.

  • I had a friend who was told she was going to have a giant baby and her kid ended up being about DS' size. He was 6.5lbs.

  • At all my apps, the drs estimated that C's birth weight would be 8lbs.  I went to MFM and had pretty much monthly/weekly u/s.   she was 6lb even at 41 weeks.

  • Don't worry. At my 33 week u/s they said C weighed over 4 1/2 pounds. He was born at 38w6d and was only 7 pounds 1 ounce. I thought for sure he was going to be over 8 pounds after they told me that measurement early on.
