Moving to NJ - Help Please

Hi ladies,

I'm from Boston.

I can't even believe this is being considered, but there's a very strong possibility MH will be getting a permanent job offer after being laid off in August. This is fantastic news, except for the fact it's in Jersey City, NJ. I'm sick to my stomach over the thought of moving, but it seems more and more likely that's what is going to happen. I think we'll know definitely within the next 3 months.

So, where do I even begin our search for living? We'd rent for at least a year to make sure the job is stable enough and that we like the area. Any suggestions? We need family friendly and close enough for MH to drive to the train to get to JC. And somewhere that has lots of things to do with a toddler so I won't go crazy if I'm a SAHM.

Thanks!

  • What kind of budget do you think you'll be looking in when you buy and how big of a house and yard do you want? There are many places you can commute from and different areas have different things to offer.
  • I'd live in Jersey City, it's very yuppy now and lots of couples with kids- lots to do. My brother and his family love it- Gymboree is walking distance as is nice parks and restaurants.  If not try Cranford or Westfield or Maplewood or Summit.
  • I would go for Hoboken or the Hamilton Park section of Jersey CIty-

Hoboken is great, Lots of young families.... its Dog and baby kinda town. Lots of moms groups. Look up Hoboken Mommies.  Lots of outdoor space.

I grew up in Jersey City, and my parents still live there. Downtown Jersey City overlooks NY, and is a very nice area with a lot of condo's, brownstones and shopping. Liberty State Park is right there and has a lot of potential for activities (it's closed for now after hurricane Sandy, but should be reopening soon.) Further away from the water, the neighborhood can get sketchy.

Hoboken is exactly as the pp described - lots of babies and doggies and potential for interaction with many other SAHMs. The only issue is that it can be very expensive to live there and there's virtually no parking. Plus, there are a lot of bars within one square mile, so weekends include lots of drunken college kids roaming the streets making noise.

Weehawken and Edgewater come after that, and both are ok, but have less potential for activity (I lived in Edgewater for a while -  it was very pretty to overlook NY, but kinda boring, even though there are quite a few shops)

For the most part, these areas are heavily populated with higher property taxes, and it is unlikely you would find property with a decent sized backyard, driveway, etc.

About a 15-20 minute train or car ride away are Lyndhurst and Nutley, which are more suburban areas, where you can have the bigger house and some grass. (I lived in Lyndhurst for a few years too and loved it! Both areas are very safe and have good school systems, but I hear Nutley's are better.)

We now live in Florham Park, and I have taken the train to Hoboken and Jersey City to visit my parents when the weather was nice and it was very easy. Florham Park is close to Summit, New Providence, Chatham, and Madison, all of which are even more suburban with good school systems and lots of SAHMs to hang out with. My area has low property taxes, decent amounts of land, and a nice sense of community.

I hope this is helpful. Let me know if you need to know anything else!

  • I have PM you with some info
  • Hi,

My husband and I are in the same boat. We are moving from Kansas City to New Jersey next week for his new job in Newark. We had originally looked at the Jersey City area but decided to live more in the suburbs. We don't have kids yet, but possibly in the next year or so. In the Jersey City area, for around $250,000 you can get a 2 bed 1 or 2 bath apartment. The monthly maintenance fees and parking fees were high and we found that most places in Jersey are just dumpy.

We started looking into the suburbs, the West Orange area (stay away from East Orange), Bloomfield, Belleville, Springfield, Summit, etc.  In these areas, for $250,000 to $300,000 we found some small, cute, older homes. Some have been remodeled. You can easily get a 3 bed, 1 or 2 bath house with a yard in this range. You may need some kitchen or bath updating still, but it all depends on what you prefer.

    Anyway, hope this helps!
