Name Change Q's

I went to change my name with SS. I changed my middle name to my maiden last name and got rid of my original middle name and took his last name. Which I thought was pretty standard.

The lady at SS told me that I can change my middle name with the federal government but when I go to change my name with the DMV I wont be able to change my middle name because in the state of NH you cant change your middle name without a court order? Following me? I have yet to go to the DMV to change my license but was wondering if anyone else had this issue or what they did. She said when I go to DMV she thinks they will send me back to SS to change my name again back to my former middle name and his last name. Kidda confussing I know but if you know what I am talking about please help me out!

Re: Name Change Q's

  • Actually, that's bullsh*t, because my middle name is now my maiden name.

There is a law that stipulates that when you marry, you can change your name however you want. Around the time I was married, someone posted it and unfortunately, I do not remember it...

I did SS first. There was no problem there. The police officer who then went to do my license originally did it incorrectly (with my former middle) but I had it corrected before I had the license done...

  • I need to get on the ball and start the name change process. I got the form for SS but it's kind of confusing. What do I need to send with the form?
  • Kimberly- if you live in Manchester, it's actually pretty easy to go to the SS office just off Elm Street... just bring a certified marriage license and your driver's license... I also brought my birth certificate just in case... we were in and out in less than 5 minutes.
  • Thanks! I'll have to head over there!
  • Yay, not true. But the DMV still hasn't gotten my records right yet. I now have two middle names. When I got my license it is correct, but my vehicle registration is completely wrong, and they don't understand when I try and correct it, I'm on attempt #3.
  • lil, I had a similar problem. I wasn't born with a middle name, so I wanted to use my maiden last name as my middle name. They said in order for me to do that, I had to go through probate court, which would have cost about $60 (if I remember correctly)! I thought that was ridiculous, so now I still have no middle name.

  • Did you, by chance, go to the Merrimack DMV?  They gave me so much crap there that I just did what they said I had to do, then went to a different DMV and got it fixed!

My name on my license used to be Michelle Rae Treat.  I wanted to change it to Michelle Treat Clancy or Michelle T. Clancy.  The person in Merrimack didn't explain this but the person in Epping did -- when I originally got my license many years ago the person input me as first name "Michelle Rae" instead of first name "Michelle" middle initial "R" so they thought I was trying to change my FIRST name.  I nicely explained that I just wanted to have my maiden name or at least the initial on my license and that Rae was just a middle name.  I brought my birth certificate, marriage certificate and new SS card and the nice dude at the Epping location did what I wanted and my license now says Michelle T Clancy like I wanted in the first place!

Stick to your guns.  They've got a line of people and just want to push you through.  Is it realistic for you to try another location?  The man in Epping even let me redo my pic!

  • I didn't have any any trouble making my maiden name my middle name now.

BUT - in working at a bank... now that I read your post, I am remembering something about the DMV IS now requiring some sort of court order for name changes - but not when it's due to marriage... just other issues.

(like a guy for example a guy's name is THOMAS and he legally wanted TOM on his drivers license) - he used to be able to choose whatever name he wanted on it, but now he needs a court order to state his legal name change is to TOM.

I have no idea if this is true now for marriage.  I would think the marriage certificate would give them the okay to change your name whatever way you want?!
