Question about bulb flowers

I know that tulips, daffodils, and other bulb flowers are supposed to be planted in the fall, but I was wondering if it would work if I planted a bloomed bulb flower in the spring. Has anyone ever tried it? I always forget to plant the bulbs in the fall. Obviously, I don't know much about gardening! Thanks!!

Re: Question about bulb flowers

  • There is something about those types of flowers where they need to be kept cool/cold for a certain amount of time for them to develop properly. I've seen websites about planting bulbs indoors in pots & what you have to do to get them to bloom. If you look that up you might be able to find some tips on what you can do to get them that cold effect & then just move them to the ground. Tip for fall, go on your calender for Mid October & mark a day for planting bulbs.
  • Thank you!

  • Meery, I promise I'm not stalking you! lol I just came over to see if there was a gardening board since I want to start a veggie garden this year. Anyway, to answer your question, I have planted tulips in the spring before when DH bought them for me for Valentine's. I think I waited until the blooms died and the leaves were starting to die back. They came up the next spring and bloomed nicely. I think the key is getting them at the right depth for the type of bulb.

  • They needs at least 6 weeks of cold I think it is...you can force them tho...Ive heard of putting bulbs in the fridge depending on how cool you keep it.
  • LOL, thanks!
