What is a decent price for a washer/dryer?

Hi! It has been a while since I posted.  We are moving in about 6 weeks, and we need to buy both a washing machine and a dryer.  I am totally not opposed to buying used, but I have no idea where to start on price?  I found a two year old set of front loading machines for $500 which seems reasonable to me...but I really have no idea? $500 seems like a chunk of cash, but when I think about it as $250 per it really doesnt seem like all that much?

How much did/would you pay for a washer/dryer?

Re: What is a decent price for a washer/dryer?

  • That is a really cheap pair of washer/dryer.  My husband and I are moving into a new house next month and have to buy a washer/dryer set too. We wanted energy saving and the two we were deciding between was a steam dryer and front load washer pair for 849.99 but had a hundred dollar rebate when you bought the set. The other was a top load washer and reg. dryer for 629.99 with a 50 dollar rebate.

So you're pricing is very good. But I'm a sucker for rebates :)

  • We just paid $400/ea for LG front-loaders with steam, but they are open-box/floor models from my husband's work. Actual customer cost would have been $890/ea (before any negotiation). The cheapest new models are going for around $600/ea.

Top loaders are still available for about $500/pair new.

Before you buy used, find out the exact model and check Consumer Reports. Some brands/models have known issues, and front-loaders are costly to fix. Test them before buying - ask to see it running and watch for excessive vibration, especially during high spin speeds (may just be off balance, but running this way for a long time can cause a lot of wear), thumping or other strange sounds. Check for musty or moldy smells. And ask them out right - why are you replacing them after only 2 years?
