Help!! Is this normal??

My kitten was diagnosed with having roundworm a couple a weeks ago. She had diarrhea so I had her stool sampled by a vet and the outcome was roundworms.

They gave me a topical. I applied it to her on 1-29. I no longer see diarrhea. Her stool is now formed but sometimes soft, but formed. I am not seeing blood or anything weird in her stool that I can tell. She was passing gas before this med was applied (maybe because of the parasites)  But....

she is still passing gas occasionally. I called the vet last week to let them know she is passing gas. They told me that can be normal after a week as the med is going through her system but two weeks later she is still passing gas.

I've never had a cat with a parasite. Is ALL the above normal?

The vet told me she should not need anymore meds after that dosage.

Is soft formed stool ok? She is a kitten so maybe that is just how she poops, sometimes it is harder.

Sorry I'm rambling. I would appreciate any responses from anyone who have had pets with this ailment.

Of course if the gas continues, I will call the vet again or maybe another vet. I just thought I would post here to read peoples experiences with this parasite.

  • I think you're probably in the clear. How old is your kitten?

When our younger cat was a tiny kitten, she naturally had softer poop, but still formed. She also had gas that could seriously clear the room. I'm not joking. How the eff a 2-lb fluffball produced that level of toxicness I'll never know, but thank the lord she grew out of it.

It sounds like, at this point, you're dealing with typical baby grossness, haha. If you have further concerns though, you're always encouraged to call your vet. They should be happy to allay any concerns you have, and will definitely have you come in if anything sounds terribly out of the ordinary.

Thanks for your response. My kitten is 9 months old. She is still gasy. Hopefully it's just kitten stuff. I've had kittens before and dont recall them being stinky lol

  • ut oh! mushy poop tonight.
  • Diarrhea this morning with a little blood in it. I'm getting nervous now. Having her stool checked again. They were wrong that she would be all set.

You're very smart to get her checked after finding more blood. There's certainly still something going on there.

I hope they find out what and get your kitty all straightened out soon!

Thanks! I'm very concerned. I'm sure once they figure things out she will be ok. I PRAY! I've only had for a a little over a month but am so in love with her. They put her on a bland diet for a couple of weeks and gave me a five day parasite med until she can have more profender if it is still indeed roundworm.

The doctor is supposed to call me later today with results of her stool sample. I'll update here later. Fingers crossed.

  • Hmm results came back negative for roundworm this time so that is good. The vet wants me to continue to give her a five day anti-parasite med and just keep an eye. He also told me to mix the ID dry food with the Wellness for kittens I was giving her.

Does anyone know if Wellness cat food is harsh for some cats' bellies? Maybe the problem is the food??

  • No food is perfect so there is a possibility that your cat is sensitive to Wellness brand cat food.  For now, I would recommend staying the course with your vets recommended treatment and if it doesn't resolve then consider adjusting her food to a diet she can tolerate.

    What's ID dry food?

Wellness, while a great food, may be too rich for your kitten's tummy. Others have had this experience with dry foods for their dog or cat.

If you're not currently feeding grain free/not looking to go that route, I'd suggest taking a look at Merrick or Chicken Soup for the Kitten/Cat Lover's Soul dry foods. Grain-free dry foods I'd suggest are Merrick Before Grain, Taste of the Wild, Natural Balance (they make both GF and grain inclusive), etc. I cannot, for the life of me, remember the pet food ratings site I used to help me find my cats' foods, but this one might be a decent start for you:

I have a ten year old cat too. So, I would have to switch them both or I could maybe mix ID brand with Wellness and see what happens - keep an eye on the situaltion. Thank you for the link. I'm going to check it out.
