He was a state senator for 7 years and a US senator for 4 years. That's 11 years in public service/politics. He was hardly a total unknown with zero experience.
Oh sure, Obama was a Senator with a less than stellar record:
From Jan 2005 to Oct 2008, Obama missed 314 of 1,300 roll call votes, which is 24.2%. This is worse than the median of 2.2% among the lifetime records of senators serving in Oct 2008.
Compare that with say a Chuck Schumer:
From Jan 1999 to Feb 2013, Schumer missed 55 of 4,485 roll call votes, which is 1.2%. This is better than the median of 1.7% among the lifetime records of senators currently serving.
Yes, Obama was a model Senator, very engaged.

Well the majority of Americans didn't care...two times. So there is that fact as well...
I'm rather wonkish, and even I think all this 2016 talk is really early.
I hope the Republicans pick a sane moderate. I'm pretty sure that won't happen.
