My husband and I close on our new home this week Thursday! We have been watching HGTV and surfing the net for months in preparation of DIY projects that will really make it our own without breaking the bank.
We have multiple spare bedrooms in our new home, as it is just the two of us right now. We would like to convert one room into a home office. We both work full time (me as a teacher and he is in the Air Force as an engineer) and are both going back to school for the next few years. We really want a space that we can get a lot of work done in. I will post what we want for our desks, and then I'm hoping some Nesties who are carpentry savvy can let us know how do-able it is.
The room is a rectangular shape. I will measure the dimensions once we do final walk-through. We would like to create a DIY mounted wooden slab desk unit. We would like to use L brackets and mount the slabs directly to the wall to give the room a really airy look; not a bunch of posts and legs sticking out. When entering the room, we would like a desk on each side and for the unit to run the entire length of the back wall, connecting the desks to each other. This way, there is room for each of our desktop computers on either side, as well as room to swivel our chairs to the back wall to have a surface to read on, write on, etc. Because he's an engineer and I'm a teacher, we do a lot of hand-written plans and projects.
We are definitely going to do a lot of research before we take on this project, but I thought posting on here would be a good first step. The desktop needs to be able to hold the weight of our computers easily, this will come down to choosing the right L brackets to support it. My husband has a very modern taste; sleek and sharp. Wood is nice because you can stain it to match various things, but are there any other tabletop alternatives that we could use for this project?
Any and all information would be beneficial! Thank you for taking the time to read.
Re: DIY wall mounted wooden slab desks
Ikea would be a good place for the desk top your describing, a quick google search of Ikea Floating Desk, resulted in tons of pictures. I like this:
There is a bloh ikeahacker that restyles ikea pieces a different way, you should be able to find some inspiration there, too.
Not sure how long the desk can be before you'll want/need a leg of some sort for support.
We used a closet shelf from Home Depot, 2x4 mounted to the wall, and bookshelves on either end for support. With the 2x4 underneath, it's not really a floating shelf. But I painted it the same color as the wall, so you'd never notice it.
Sorta like this pic, only up against a wall...
This one is closer to mine:
