Our first space! Help!

Okay here's the deal: my fiance and I are getting married and moving into our first space together this spring.  we have identified a style we like but have very different types of furniture and tastes from our previous apartments.  In an effort to save up, we will be living in a 1bed/1bath for at least a year (so few storage options).  I really want our first space to be cohesive and decorated, but between his warm cherry desk and my black, geometric platform bed, it feels a little hand-me-down-ish (that's just one example).  The last thing I want to do is just say we're getting rid of his stuff because then he feels like it's MY space not OURS (huge priority to me).  So is this something we'll just have to live with for a while?  Any advice or encouragement for the future?  Anyone else been through this?

Re: Our first space! Help!

  • Have you ever considered painting or refinishing your furniture? This is a great way to make non-matching pieces have a more cohesive look without buying a whole new set of furniture or getting rid of pieces that don't fit. If he doesn't care about the color of his desk, what if you restained it a darker tone or painted it black? Or what if you painted both his furniture and your furniture all the same color, like white or gray. If you like the shabby chic look, you could do a worn-looking paint finish. If you like something more modern, use semi-gloss paints in fun colors, or even a silver leaf effect! The options are really endless!

I recently painted my bedroom furniture to better match our bedroom's decor and I think it turned out great! I went from black matte finish dressers to semi-gloss off-white and it really ties the whole room together. At the moment, I don't have nightstands, but the ones I have in mind are the same off-white color, so even though they are a different style, they will work well together since they are the same color. I share all of my home decorating tips on my blog if you ever are looking for a little inspiration! I hope this helped!   http://darlingdwellings.com
