Help me decide what to do with this table
I picked up this table set for our breakfast area and I'm torn as to how to refinish it.
I'm thinking either all black or restain in a dark chestnut color.
I saw a similar table at a consignment shop recently that was beautifully done with a creamy yellow distressed glaze but I doubt I could pull that off, and the table was sold.
Anyone refinish a table like this or have some inspiration pics? Haven't found too much on pinterest.
Re: Help me decide what to do with this table
Have you thought about just restaining the top and painting the rest black or antiqued white? That's something I've seen a lot of lately with tables like this and I think it looks really nice! Here's a photo of a table I saw on Pinterest with the same look

I hope this helps!

Any wooden item can be painted or redone, simply sand first. It will be time consuming with all the grooves on the pedestal, but a good sanding job, like a good tape job before painting, is always worth the effort, LOL.
Distressed glazes are not hard. Are you talking about the "crackle" effect from paint on wood? There's a product for that by Valspar (I think) that I've used on some second hand side tables in my living room. But I might not do that on a surface people eat from, unless you sand afterward........you might get paint flakes.
There are also colored wood stains at the home improvement stores, where the color is transparent, and the wooden grain shows through. You can get them in any color of the rainbow, plus black or white.
Everything I've found in a DIY capacity I've found at hgtv.com or diynetwork.com. I'm going to be doing built in benches in my kitchen this year, and there was actually a "Built In how to" book at Lowe's that I bought with info on built in benches, bookcases, etc. There were a ton of very large books in the book section there with every possible topic.
Good luck.
I forgot where i found it -- but there are a few blogs with step by steps on re-staining oak bathroom cabinets to a mocha color. the same principles would apply here.
staining would let you see the woodgrain through the stain, while painting would give it more of a flat finish. personally i HATE distressed finishes. they look too 'destroyed' to me, and i would rather my furniture naturally age.... sort of the same principle of buying jeans with holes already in them =P
