Need hair curling help. Troubleshoot my routine.

Now that my hair is longer i'm trying to figure out the best way to curl so it actually holds a curl. Maybe someone can read this and tell me what i'm doing wrong. Right now my hair is pretty long, almost down to my bra strap in the back and all one length.

I washed my hair last night using my normal shampoo and conditioner (John Frieda Brilliant Brunette shampoo & Loreal Everstrong conditioner).  After towel drying I sprayed on a leave in conditioner/detangler (without it I cannot comb through my hair. I use Tigi Fast Fixx spray) and apply between a nickel and quarter size amount of Orofluido. I combed through and air dried.

Normally i'll blow dry about 90%, let it air dry the rest of the way, and then curl. I have tried using different styling products immediately before curling (a curling mousse, using a tiny amount on dry hair right before curling, and a curling spray/thermal treatment).   I'll curl my hair, let it cool while i do my makeup, and by then the curl has completely fallen out.

It was suggested to me to not blow dry first because your hair will tend to hold whatever style it is heated with first (so straight when it's blown out, or curly when it's curled).   So this morning I curled my air dried hair, using the curling spray/thermal treatment.  It looked great so I didn't finger comb it out or separate the curls.

It's 4:30 now and my hair has a little wave to it towards the ends but that's pretty much it. This is, however, the longest that it's lasted in a long time. lol

I hold the hair on the curling iron long enough so it's too hot to touch on the outside layer and my hair does curl at first, but i'm wondering if my curling iron isn't getting hot enough (for my hair)? i'm using an old conair 1" curling iron that only goes up to 12 at the highest setting but I see now the newer models have 25 heat settings... (When I flatiron my hair wtith my Sedu I set it to 400 degrees and it's perfect).

Thoughts?  If I need a new curling iron, any recs? Hot Tools are rec'd alot on YouTube.

Re: Need hair curling help. Troubleshoot my routine.

  • Hello :) Lurker here. I am a hairstylist of 3 years, thought I'd offer up a suggestion. My curling iron is Helen of Troy I believe, I got it at Sallys. Same brand we use in the salon I work at. It is supposed to get up to 400 degrees. I usually dont reccommend may people to go that high with their heat tools unless their hair is very coarse!

I also use a workable hairspray, my favorite is Big Sexy Spray and Play, and spray each section lightly before I curl it, then spray again before it cools down.

Another thing is try a clarifying shampoo once a week, I would pick one up from any local salon. Most chain salons such as great clips, cost cutters, supercuts etc. all have their own brand that is very affordable and of good quality. That removes any waxy buildup from the hair that could be weighing it down, causing the curl to fall out.

    Hope that helps! Good luck.

  • Thanks, Airbear. I only wash my hair every other day or every third day and I do use a clarifying shampoo once a week.

I tried curling my hair again today (second day hair) and tried smaller sections this time and some of the curls are still there. I think i'm going to try a new curling iron that gets hotter. I really think I need higher heat.

  • Does your hair have any natural curl?  Is it dry, oily?
  • I also use alligator clips to pin the coiled curl to my head to let them cool completely. I usually pin a bunch together (so only use 6 or so clips), do my makeup, give a spray with hairspray and take the clips out. Have you tried that?

  • Honestly, I've found that when my hair gets too long it starts to lose its curl. Right now, my hair is all one length (no layers) and about mid-back and it will not hold a curl - and I'm naturally curly! I find that when my hair is a bit shorter with layers the curl comes back to life because my hair isn't weighing itself down.
