question about quitting BC

I've been on it for almost 2 years, since we had DD.  I'm going to finish this pack and then stop.  I'm so tired of never thinking about sex and never being turned on. I don't even get wet anymore and I can't tell you the last time I used a vibrator.  My ob told me it could just be the fact that I have a kid now and am tired, but I am really starting to think it could be the BC pills and want to find out if this is true or not.  My last pill is Sunday.

For those of you that have quit taking them, how fast did you notice your libido come back if at all?  Any other side effects?  Before taking these pills it has been probably 10 or more years since I've been on them and don't remember much. We obviously will be using condoms again as we don't want another kiddo for a few more years.

Re: question about quitting BC

  • I had the exact same issues as you on BC pills. I was on the same one for years and it was only in the last couple I had those problems.

I went off it in August last year. I noticed an increase in libido straight away and gradually it increased further. I would say however that its only good again since January. I find myself enjoying sex a lot more and wanting it a lot more.

The downside is, the demon cramps have returned, along with the vomiting, fatigue and weakness. I guess I'll just have to deal with that now we're TTC.

  • im on nuvarng andtook my out monday for the same reasons. I am going to try and go a month or two (depending on when my period falls, i get married on 04/24/2013 and dont want to be on my period) without it and see how i feel. I know that usually when i dont have it in, im more in the mood. after thinking about i, i realized i never had this issue before, and ive had it for the last year. I realized that before I met my FI i wasnt using BC regularly, and would go months without it because I wasnt having sex, but was still "in the mood". Im hoping that going a month or two without it will balance out my natural hormones and ill be back to my regular self. Some women say it takes months to go back to normal, and some say it happens very quick. I hope itll happen very quick for me :-) ill let you know.

After the honeymoon, i may go to my gyno to discuss my options, or decide to not use an BC at all. we are going to TTC anytime soon and i dont want any oopsie babies. both of us would rather not use condoms, and knowing myself and my irrational paranoia of always being pregnant, i feel like ONLY using condoms would drive me crazy because ill ALWAYS think we did something wrong.

Ive been on nuvaring for about 8 years an dlike i said i wasnt using it regularly....i think the regular use it whats messing up my sex drive
  • This gives me hope ladies:)  After DD I wanted to be on BC because my pregnancy was horrific and I didn't want to do that again right away.  BUT condoms worked for us before and heck at this point I would try the diaphragm.  I'm desperate.  DH thought it was because he put on some weight but that's not it.  this will save us money anyways without having it filled every month.

  • It may not be immediate, you will probably still have ups and downs hormonally. Everything felt better after 1 cycle for me, but not consistently improved for several cycles. FWIW condoms are not cost effective, then again we have to go latex free so I am sure that drives the cost up.

  • It took me about a month to get my drive back, and it came back full force.  We use a mixture of the diaphram and condoms, even though H doesn't trust the diaphram as much. The only negative to the diaphram is that I find it difficult to find the spermicide to use with it. When we do find it, it's about $15 a tube, and a tube lasts about 5 uses. With the increased sex drive, condoms are still a cheaper option for us.

Good luck.  I hope going off helps your libido.

  • You could also use a fertility tracker along with condoms as a non-hormonal BC method. I use My Fertility Friend, they have an app too. Now I know when I'm fertile and I just don't have sex on those days. I also use condoms/pull out method. It's been 3 years and only a few times did I go and buy a Plan B pill just in case. I would buy one of those and have it at home just in case.

Good luck. You could also try Wellbutrin, it's an anti-depressant and it's been known to boost libido. I was on it for over a year, and I noticed an increase in libido because I just felt better about myself.

TTC since March 2013 - BFP 4/13/13 on first cycle, EDD 12/21/13, blighted ovum discovered 6/7/13 @11+6, M/C 6/9/13. Waiting for one cycle after m/c to TTC.
