Re: Learning to coupon

  • Do you ever go to any of those stores that have those keychain barcodes -- or whatever it is you call them?

The store issues them. You sign up for them; they give you a barcode "charm" to put on your keychain and when you pay for your items at the store, they scan it in. This way, you get the bargains that are on sale that week.

Tons of stores have them -- the bigger supermarket chains, the big drugstore chains.

Try the "circulars" in yoru Sunday paper --- clip the coupons for the items you want and then use them at the store.

    That's how I do it.

There are also Groupons --- that's up to you which bargains you want.
  • check the money matters section of the board...there is a whole thread about couponing over there with lots of advice and useful links...thread is a few days old....

  • I use a really awesome website called MyCityMommy.  You can find the city closest to you, and other women (mostly lucky SAHMs) do the leg work for you.  They tell you what coupons will be in the Sunday paper (your BEST source of coupons!) and how they match up best with ads at a bunch of grocery and drug stores.

I use this and only spend a couple afternoons a month messing with my own coupons.  GL!

  • Set aside time and plan out your menus for at least 2 weeks (base them on what is on sale and what you get coupons for).  Check the coupon policies at the stores you shop (some will double coupons which will save  you more).  Some will not accept printable internet coupons.  Once you get that info you can figure out how to save more.

I usually make my menus, make my grocery list, and anything I don't have a coupon for I will go online and search for a printable coupon.  I keep a binder full of coupons for items that I use (dividers and plastic sleeves to organize your coupons make it easy).  I may leave a coupon in there for a month or two without using it--but if I see an unexpected store sale I will pull it out and save big.  Carry ALL of your coupons with you for that reason.  It helps to have a place clear to store items you have but won't use right away.  I like to buy in multiples so I always have necessities on hand, and that minimizes trips to the store.
