Dining room - are two toned paint out of style ?

I was thinking of painting our new dining room choc brown above chair rail and golden beige below. Is this dated? Should I just do choc brown and leave chair rail white? Thanks!

It doesn't sound outdated to me, but I'd probably reverse the colors and have the darker color at the bottom. Scuff marks would be harder to see, and a lighter color at the top draws the eyes upward.

I haven't seen two-toned paint in a magazine in ages.  If you're not familiar with this site, it's what designers all across the country are working on right now, so it's great to check trends.  You'll notice the only two-tone look is white wainscoting below and paint above.  Wainscoting's easy to DIY with 1x4s.

I personally don't like two tone walls. I like the look of a color on top and white from the chair rail down though. It's funny because we are looking for houses where we might be moving and I've been noticing this in a lot of houses so I would not say it is out of style.

Ditto. Definitely put the darker on the bottom it will not only hide scuffs better but the darker color is visually heavier than lighter color. Putting the darker color on top will make the ceilings feel lower.

 While it isn't out of style, it is a more traditional look (also can be a casual country look depending on decor).

We have two-toned right now, and it's not horrible, but it isn't my favorite. We are going to do a DIY wainscoting. I can't wait-- it is so inexpensive to do, and it makes such a big impact.
