Airplane with Maltese

Anyone ever travel with Maltese? I plan on carrying them on. I have two and have purchased two carriers for them. They are pretty yappy, Im thinking of asking the vet for a sedative. Any advice???

Re: Airplane with Maltese

  • A sedative is a great idea.  The pressure inside airplanes can be very unpleasant for pets.  Your vet would have a better idea of how to travel with them.  Good luck!
  • i dont have any experience in this but i would def call the vet and run it by them and see what they feel is best.

  • Yes, I plan on talking to my vet. I'm so nervous to take them, but were going to be gone a month, and I couldn't bear to leave them.

  • If you haven't already, also make sure you check out the airline's pet policy. If you're bringing them in the cabin, the carriers need to be able to fit under the seat in front of you, and I know there's an added fee, almost like a ticket for your pet.

  • I actually was just looking into traveling with my Malti-Tzu, and was told that sedatives can have negative effects on dogs at high altitudes.

I bought this "natural" supplement at PetSmart for traveling in the car, because my dog would wind himself up to the point he would get sick. He wouldn't stay in his traveler/harness. He literally would Houdini himself out of it and then jump up in the passenger seat. The supplement helped, but I wouldn't say it had a sedative effect.

Off topic, but please read the board FAQs. We don't like to perpetuate the use of cutesy "designer" dog names because it leads people to believe they are a legitimate dog breed, rather than really just being adorable mutts. Your dog is a Maltese/Shi tzu mix. :)

  • I do realize that he isn't purebred and usually don't refer to him as that because people always go "a what?!?" and I have to describe it anyways. :)

He is so adorable it's gross. If I could figure out how to put his picture up, I would.
