Ideas on a young girls room?
We're in the process of purchasing our first home! So it's been fun planning all the decorating and what not (I'm sure ill be posting much more on this board soon!) but for now I am wondering if anyone has any ideas on this subject...she is 6 and wants a pink & black bedroom. Here's my concern, you all know I'm sure how often girls change their style! I'd hate to go all out pink & black and have her be into something completely different next year... Maybe there's a way I can neutralize it so it can be easily changed? Just not sure how I'd do that... Any advice?
Re: Ideas on a young girls room?
I've redone bedrooms for both my son & daughter, and my daughter is now 18, so understand I've "been there" a few times.
Has pink been her favorite color for a long time? For my daughter it was purple, and that lasted for well over 10 years.
If she's been a "pink person" for a while, then you can safely paint the room a light to medium pink. Plus, pink can go with so many other pastels or bolds, it should be ok for a few years if it's on the walls.
Also, I recommend including her, even though she's only 6. Rather than taking her to the home improvement store, bring home some paint cards in a pink you could live with, and give her a choice. Once that's decided, then ask her what type of prints she'd like in pink & black (my guess is leopard, but maybe she's thinking of something else).
Most kids are happy with their rooms for 3-5 years. You'll probably be fine until she's a pre-teenager. But IMO it's important to make it clear to her that changing her mind is a MAJOR deal, so choose wisely, because it's going to be around for a while.
My kids wore out their bedding (comforters & sheets) about every 2-3 years. Around that time they were getting sick of their chosen prints, and we could usually find some bedding, rugs, pillows & curtains or valances in different prints that went with the wall colors.
Also, look at Wallies (link here) http://www.wallies.com/. They have a lot of wall stickers to add interest without costing a ton.
I like the idea of a neutral wall (non pink or black) and doing dark wood or white furniture. Bring the pink and black in with artwork frames, lamps, pillows, window treatments and bedding.
By keeping the walls and big furniture pieces in neutral tones, you can easy swap out the other items when/if she outgrows.
I agree -- keep much of it neutral if you can. you can buy accessories (bedding, lamps, furniture, picture frames, etc) in the bolder colors.
also -- consider keeping the main decor fairly non-age specific (aka don't go for little girl pink flowers for bedding....maybe stick to pink and black dots or stripes?) you'd have more of a chance of a teenager still liking the room. the tiny accessories are a lot easier to change over the years than the big pieces.
