I'm trying to figure out where my DH and I stand. Sometimes I think we're doing well but since we live in such a high living cost area, I was wondering if you could take a look at my budget:
Combined total monthly income: $5560
Rent: 1400
2 Cars: 380
Utilities (including cable): 280
Groceries: 220
Monthly credit card payments: 400
Gas: 200
Total in savings: 4,220
*This doesn't include our "play" money so it's just a ballpark. TIA!
Re: Budget
What about:
Cell phones
Insurance (health, cars and renters)
Travel
Gifts
Co-pays
Pets
Charity
Entertainment/dining out
How old are you? Are you saving for retirement? How much? Balances?
What are your cc balances and interest rates?
Any long-term goals?
Honestly you have work to do.
I don't look at this as a budget because you are not accounting for all your income.
When I add up your expenses I show an excess of over $2500 per month. Where is that going? And with that kind of excess why do you have a credit card balance?
You say you will budget for gifts as they come up. You need to budget for those every month so that when they come up the money is there. Same with travel. Also missing are clothing, personal care, etc. You may lump that into fun money, but you don't have a line item for that. You need to set amounts for these things, including a monthly savings goal outside of retirement.
