Hello! I know you all probably
figured out why I have been MIA recently. This is the first chance I really had
to sit at the computer...
Michael
Anthony made his debut exactly two weeks early on Valentine's Day at 1:29 pm
weighing 6lbs 7oz and measuring 19.25 inches long. If I was a betting woman, I
would have won the birth pool, because I had a feeling he was coming that day
My labor
was relatively quick. I woke up around 5:30 am to use the bathroom. I went back
to bed and around 5:40, I felt the baby kick but this time it hurt. I let out
an "ow!" And felt a pop. Not knowing if my water broke, I got back up
and walked to the bathroom where some fluid hit the floor. I then yelled for DH
to get up that it was time to go to the hospital. We arrived at the hospital
around 6:20. I started having contractions on the way, coming about 5 minutes
apart but getting stronger and closer together with each one. After
registering, I was sent back to triage where I was examined. No need to pee in
a cup... I was already 8cm almost 9cm and rapidly approaching the point of no
return for an epidural. I was immediately sent to a delivery room. By way of
background, I was 3 and 4 cm dialated at my weekly appts on Feb 1 and 8
respectively. It appeared I did all of the passive labor without even knowing
it (I never felt a painful contraction and even worked and did housework up to
the night before delivery). Once in delivery, they rushed to get me the
epidural as my contractions were coming faster and stronger. Once I had the epi
around 730, I felt immediate relief. I was told to chill for a while. Around
10:30, I was ready to push. After pushing a bit, both my blood pressure and the
baby's started to drop rapidly. A team rushed in and started to work on me,
flipping me from side to side, giving me oxygen and then giving me a shot of
something in my IV. I was trying everything in my power not to panic, as I did
not want a c-section. Finally, our pressures came back up and pushing resumed.
I was still on oxygen in between pushes and had to roll onto my side. I was
then having trouble moving the baby down the canal because I was too numb. My
epidural was then cut in half. I was finally able to feel pressure (no pain)
and pushing resumed again. Mikey made his debut at 1:29 pm. I ended up with a
second degree tear because Mikey thought it would be cute to come out like
Superman with his arms stretched out. This also contributed to my problems
moving him down the canal.
I can't
say enough good things about my L and D team at PA Hospital. They were
extremely supportive and helpful and really kept me at ease. I did not have my
regular doc for the delivery, but she was ending her shift from the day before
and came in to check on me when she heard I was there, which I thought was
nice. The doc I ended up with was great and yes, all she did was catch and
stitch. I did have a resident in the room with me most of the time, and she was
great as well.
We lucked
out and ended up with a private room, which was great. The one negative of my
whole experience at PA Hospital has to do with breast feeding. Mikey was having
lots of trouble latching. By the second night, he lost 8% of his birth weight
and his bilirubin was slightly elevated. He also wasn't urinating. I plead with
the nurses to give me a bottle for him. They insisted I keep trying to breast
feed him. He was crying non stop and I knew he was hungry and on Saturday
morning, in tears, I sent DH to the nurses station to get him a bottle. They
gave him one finally. A pediatrician then came in to check the baby. I told her
what was going on. She told us based on the weight loss, etc. we needed to
start him on a bottle right away. Mikey drank almost 2 ounces his first
feeding! The doc then commented the hospital is very pro breast feeding once
you say you want to do it, so it seems like this is an issue they come across a
lot. I am now pumping and rotating breast milk with formula. We still have
issues with him latching, but he is starting to get better. He was back up to
an ounce over his birth weight at his pedi appt this week and his bilirubin
count was way down.
Mikey is
such a good baby and I am so in love with him. I am enjoying every minute of
being his mom..And yes, the mesh panties are awesome

Re: He's Here!
Congrats! I was also blissfully I was unaware I was in labor until it was time (but less far along than you, you're a champ!).
Sorry to hear about the feeding frustrations but seems like you're in a better place now. It's really tough at first.
I give up. I am going to toss this laptop out today. Sorry for the duplicate pic in the post.
Aww congrats! Glad you were able to get the epi. Try not to stress about breastfeeding/pumping. I had to pump from day one and it's tough! (I'm actually pumping at this very minute for DS #2! haha). You're right about PA hospital being great about breastfeeding, but I do partly blame them for making me feel guilty about using formula when DS #1 was in the NiCU & my supply was low. Good luck with everything! You know what's best for your baby!

Aw hes so cute! Congrats!!!
Thanks for posting about your experience at PA hospital!
He's so alert looking and sweet! Congrats!
Re bf- your insurance should cover a lactation consult and have the pedi check him for tongue tie as it can def hinder latch. Make sure when you hold him his belly is facing yours and his ears, shoulder and butt are aligned in a straight line. Get him to open his mouth reeeeeal wide - express a little milk and tickle his nose with your nipple. That can help open the mouth wide. As soon as it's wide open, aim for the roof of his mouth and put your whole nip and part of the areola in his mouth. Make sure your boob is supported by your hand bc his head isn't strong enough to hold it up yet. It will hurt at first but shouldn't be painful through a feed - if it is break suction and try again.
Good luck. There's a huuuge bf learning curve. And congrats again!!

Congrats babe!

Thanks ladies for the well wishes and kind words!
LD- thanks for the tips. I will def have the pedi check his tongue. He is getting better at it each day. He now suckles on it more each day and the amount of time it takes to get him to actually put the nipple in his mouth is improving with each feed. I just try to be patient with him because he is just a baby.
