Seizures and getting pregnant??

Hey ladies. Okay, so I have now had 2 seizures within 5 months of eachother. I am taking Keppra and it was going fine, I forgot to take my meds for a whole day and had a seizure valentine's night. The one prior to that happened 4 days before my wedding. I have noticed that when I do have these seizures it seems to be caused when I am pretty stressed. This is my fear, we want to start trying to get pregnant within a year, but these seizures have freaked us out. I mean, a pregnant body is pretty stressed usually, right, and it takes a toll on our bodies, hormones, nerves etc.

Does anyone else have seizures and had a baby? I guess I'm just looking for a little reassurance to make me feel better about this. I now will start crying because I am worried that my body won't let me keep a baby. I seriously never thought that I truly wanted one so bad until I started thinking that I may not be able... Any thoughts???

Re: Seizures and getting pregnant??

  • You really need to speak with your doctor about this. None of us are going to have these answers for you, we don't know your exact situation nor what is causing your seizures. I would strongly caution against getting pregnant BEFORE going to see your doctor about this. They will be able to tell you how to prepare, if meds need to be switched, precautions etc.
  •  I really think you should speak with a doctor or maybe even find some sort of seizure support group.

A family friend of my MIL is going through a really rough time right now because of her seizures and having a baby. Basically the friend had a child. When the child was about 3 weeks old she had a seizure and dropped the baby. And now CPS is involved and she doesn't have custody of her child.

But in your paragraphs alone I can tell you two are different people. She had the baby knowing that she wouldn't have the father around and knowing that she wouldn't have help if something like a seizure happened. Her pregnancy went fine for the exception of getting into a car crash because she was driving and had a seizure while pregnant.

Again talking to a doctor and a support group would be your best option.

  • I have epilepsy. I've talked to 3 neuros about being pregnant while on Tegretol. I was told to take folic acid and call my neuro if I have a seizure. I haven't been pregnant yet, but H and I are headed there hopefully in about a year or so.

IME neuros and gynos and family drs all know next to nothing about epilepsy and pregnancy. They all tell me to ask the other Dr. I wish I was joking. It's been really frustrating. I've been doing my own research and advocating for myself a lot.

    GL, you're not alone.

Thank you!  you're right, but  he says it's fine and there is a very small chance of having problems with the pregnancy and birth defects, claimed almost same as any normal person would have, and just said that I would have to go to a high risk gyno.  I have just been wondering if anyone has gone thru this.  I know people have seizures and babies, I just was looking for a piece of mind...  Good luck to you too!!!  Its scary.  Seizures are so unknown, they don't actually know what causes mine exactly.  I have been just figuring out that its high stress alcohol and not taking my medicine.  Or that's what had happend with my most recent one.... I think
