Hello all! To recap, I posted a little while ago about our 7 week old female kitten we adopted who was sick with diarrhea, an upper resp. infection and an eye infection.
We took her to the vet for her check up and she is perfectly healthy again! Tested negative for FIV and Feline Lukemia (thank goodness!!) and is up to date on her shots We are thrilled to have her, she's a sweetheart.
I do have a concern, though. Our two year old kitty loves her so far. They play and have fun.. He does act very jealous sometimes, and wont stop eating her kitten food! It's so frustrating because her bowl is constantly being emptied and I'm not always around to see who's eating it all! We leave his food out in his regular spot, and for the most part he is not interested in it anymore. I've caught her eating his food, because he's emptied out her bowl!
I want to make them stop, and eat their own food... But it's hard. I'm afraid if he keeps eating the kitten food he will consume too many calories and get tubby!! I cant keep him on a strict feeding schedule, because his stomach is sensitive and he will vomit if he doesnt eat all day.. I guess he eats too fast or too much.. Not exactly sure. The poor cat pukes all the time. I just leave his food out all day and he eats when he wants and it seems to help that problem...
I guess what I'm asking is if anyone has any advice or experience with this type of behavior.. Thanks in advance
Re: Adult Cat eating Kitten Food
What brands of adult cat and kitten food are you feeding?
Our 1-y/o cat was also totally into the kitten food when we brought home our second kitty. We were also still free feeding at that point, and the adult cat packed on a LOT of weight, so you're right to be concerned about that. She'll be 6 in a few months, and she just finally lost all that weight in the last year.
Suggestions: if the adult cat food you're feeding is upsetting his tummy when he's not free fed, consider switching. Our younger kitty threw up regularly on her lower quality food, even with free feeding. With a switch to a potentially better-for-him food, and a set feeding schedule, you may easily solve the problem of him getting into the kitten food and throwing up.
You'd obviously feed him and the kitten at the same time, but in separate locations to keep him from ditching his food and going for hers.
Edit: removed about the how old is she; just read up and reminded myself that she's still super teeny! In which case, you could try switching them to an all life stages food that is formulated for all cats no matter their age, from young to kittens up to seniors. Felidae makes an ALS food, and I believe Natural Balance does as well...I'm gonna check.
