Advice on home improvement...

We bought a new home in December. It was a short sale and was ready to move after a few minor changes. One of the things we need to do is change out the windows. The ones that are in actually wiggle inside the frame; some don't even stay open. So now we have contacted several companies that we found on Angie's List. The quotes are more than $5K different. Now we are trying to find out if we should do them all at once, or do a few here and there as we get money. What would you all do?

Re: Advice on home improvement...

  • My parents replaced the windows in their home. They did the front of the house one year and the back the next year to divide up the cost.

It was 10 in front and 6 in back.

  • Make sure your quotes are for the same quality of window --there is a wide range of quality aes price  (how the frame is constructed, insulated etc along with the glass features makes a big difference

We did all the windows at the same time (10K)

Use a reputable brand of window as well acs window installer with a good reputation - not just someone who "does" windows along with a list of other construction tasts.

  • Would you need to finance these if you do them all at once? If so, don't finance the windows and do them as you get money for a few.  I assume that's what you meant by do them all or a few at a time as we get money.

I would see why the quotes are so different.  I'm assuming its quality of windows or that one company subcontracts them out.

  • Thank you for your input. We have contacted the companies for the information and are awaiting response.
