Babysitting the elderly?

This type of service might not exist but - my coworker lives with her parents. Her mom was recently diagnosed with cancer and now can only get around with a walker. Her dad works at a bakery so he's home by 11am. She needs to hire someone to just be at the house from 8-11ish so that when she comes into work, the mom isn't home alone. Its literally just babysitting and making sure the mom doesn't need anything or doesn't fall. They have a nurse and a therapist that come in so its not like the person needs to do any nurse activities.

Is there a service for this? THey live in the Northeast. Do you think a regular baby sitting service might do it? Any help is appreciated!

Re: Babysitting the elderly?

  • It's called eldercare, but it usually focuses on patients with dementia or Alzheimer's.  In essence, she's looking for a companion or an aide. Even though you said the mom uses a walker, does she have independent mobility?  Because if she's not able to move on her own and requires assistance getting in/out bed/chairs/bathroom, then she needs a certified healthcare professional. Otherwise, an unlicensed aide/companion who is injured while lifting or assisting the mother could open them up to liability.
  • From what I understand she has independent mobility. It's more like just help her in the sense of like..if she's hungry or thirsty maybe instead of her getting up and using the walker, this person could get it, etc. I suppose if she fell on her own the person would have to help her get back up but its not to the extent of helping her get up, go to the bathroom, etc.

  • care.com also covers elder care, not just childcare/nannies.

My mom hired Angel Companions for my grandmother and has been very happy with them.

  • Check out Home Helpers. It's non-medical care; more like help with life.  Whether it's taking you grovery shopping, keeping you company/reading with you, light housework, etc.  My gram worked for them a few years ago, which I thought was hysterical since at 80+ years old, she was older than many of her clients!
