Teaching certification question
Hey ladies,
I know we have a few teachers on the board. My husband is thinking about becoming a teacher. He's filling out the app to become a sub right now, but is thinking about becoming a FT teacher. What are the requirements in Alabama? He already has a bachelor's degree. I've looked on the state's dept. of ed. website, but the links to the info I need are dead ends.?
Anyone care to share, in a nutshell, what he may have to do? In FL I know you pretty much have to take a test and if you pass then you're good to go.
Thanks!?
Re: Teaching certification question
Hey Lauren- I am in the 5th year program myself, so feel free to ask questions! I would be happy to talk to you guys about it
Also, I don't know where he wants to go if he did that, but when I was trying to decide I considered UAB. I attended an informational type meeting to ask questions about their 5th year program where they explained requirements and ways to get certification. It was helpful in understanding the process for Alabama, even though I decided to go back to the alma mater instead.
They explained an alternate way without 5th year, but to be honest it wouldn't advise it....it sounded like they esssentially made you take very few classes, then take the Praxis, and then you're out on your own...I think they called it 'ABC'. I think that is the kind of thing Leah is referring to-it would be beyond just the Praxis test. If it's something he really wants to do though, the support of a Masters program would be so much better as far as preparation goes.
If he did 5th year, depending on his prerequisites needed, it could take more than a year. But, like the pp said, it is a Masters. Truthfully the title '5th year' is a little misleading, lol. I needed 12 hours of math, science, Social Studies, and English in my coursework to be 'highly qualified' ,but my BS in Psychology didn't have that much math. So I have had to take 2 math classes for that to add up to 12 hours. All in all it'll be 2 years total (Jan. 08-Dec. 09) when I get my degree.
Okay I will stop rambling now...:-P
Sorry if I was confusing before. I was referring to the 5th year program to get a Masters. I was just saying that a school will hire him in a temporary position if they are desperate before he completes the program. He would still need to complete it though and take the Praxis. If he is not teaching at the end of his courses, then he will probably either need to student teach without pay for a semester, or teach full time with pay for a year before he graduates. Most people perfer to do a year with pay.
My brother did this. He had a BS in CIS and he decided that he wanted to teach/coach. Due to the fact that he was going to teach computer and technology classes and also wanted to coach football he was hired on an emergency certification and given a deadline of 3 years to complete his 5th year or he would lose emergency certification. He completed it in 2 because he had to go back and take a few other classes like Stars did to be highly qualified.
But I will say I believe it's hard to find a position open like that. Most of the time you just have to find other jobs until you can do until you can finish school and get certified.
Like Star21Gazer's brother.....some of my DH's friends that teach at the school with him are doing the same thing. Now with schools staring down proration......it is going to be HARD to find a school system that will hire you under those circumstances!! Even if you are given an emergency cert. and a job....when cuts come down the line....your job will most likely be the first to be cut! The economy is kicking everyones butt right now
Like the pp's said...it is better to just do the 5th year program. It will put you at much better odds finding a job! Schools really like for you to have a masters....and it means more money
