Tough Dog Toys

Does anybody have suggestions for some really tough, legitimate dog toys. So far this Aussie pup has destroyed a kong, nylabone, a tennis ball, 5 or 6 stuffed squeaky toys, a couple of rubber squeaky toys, 2 ropes...the list goes on.

We still throw tennis balls with her in the yard and house but we don't let her just chomp on them.  We need to find something that lasts more than a couple of days haha All suggestions are greatly appreciate!

Re: Tough Dog Toys

  • i am no help as we have the same problem. My cane corso puppy goes through toys like crazy, even the ones that are supposed to be tough. I try to buy them bigger and that seems to make the last longer.

  • Regular kong or the black kong?

Dr. Foster's sells an "indestructible" ball for dogs that they picture in their catalog being played with by a tiger (if I recall correctly). I've never tried it, just throwing it out there.

Our dog is a toy destroyer too, so I buy her stuffed toys from Goodwill. I check them carefully for anything inside other than normal fluff (beads, batteries, etc.) I'd much rather spend 99 cents than $8 since she'll destroy it right away. One toy that lasted a little while was a tennis ball inside a knee sock, then knotted a couple times up the length. It was more fun to fling it around and whack herself in the head than chew it; just watch out because it will fly. I think that lasted a couple months before she finally ripped through the sock. We also take her toys away between play sessions, otherwise she'll chew on them all night.

For hard chewers, go big.  Get black kongs a size (or two) up.  Galileo nylabones are stronger than regular nylabones.  But the nylabones that lasted the longest at our house were the rings...no ends to concentrate their energy on.  Grab cheap fleece at a fabric store and make your own braided tug toys.  They won't last any longer, but they'll be cheaper.  Stuff less squeaky toys are your friend.  They're spendy though.  After Christmas sales are awesome because I like to pick up toys with lots of squeakers for cheap.  Dogs love them, and 16 squeakers extend the toys lifespan a bit.

I have yet to meet a dog that can destroy an egge.   They're just very loud when a dog is bouncing it around the house.

If you play frisbee, jawz frisbees are awesome.  Every time duke catches a regular frisbee, it gets 4 new puncture wounds.  We played with jawz frisbees daily for over a year, and they're roughed up, but still playable with no punctures.

  • Here are some of my favorites for Bubba:

Squeaker mat toys with 16 squeakers. This wasn't necessarily more durable, but it lasted a lot longer than he usually goes through squeaker toys since it has minimal stuffing and all the squeakers are individually sewn.

Extra large ropes  -- this one in particular, the KaleidoROPE was very strong and long enough that he would still play with each end after he chewed it in half.

This nylabone both of my dogs love. Any of the nylabone dura chews are very good.

This tire was great until I put treats in it and left him alone with it.

And especially the white tubular bones that are sometimes filled with peanut butter or cheese. After they eat the filling (or you can buy them empty), you can either wipe some peanut butter inside, or make a mixture of dog food and some leftover chicken (or whatever) and freeze them.

All of these toys I would buy again. The most important thing I have learned though, is the only thing I can leave them alone with is either nylabones or the tubular bones. Everything else is for supervised play only so he doesn't go into his destructive chew mode.

  • We had the same issue with our red heeler pup. Tried west paw toys and these are the only toys that have stuck around. Westpawdesigns.com they have a section for tough dog toys and we have a ball of that brand that has been around for over a year!! That is huge for our chewer of a dog

We have the same rope toy, Nylabone and tire and have for a while. We always buy a size or two up and try to switch out his toys so they last a little longer and it keeps him interested in them. Kong also has a new line made of bulletproof vest material that we're looking forward to trying!

  • I've also heard that antlers are good chew toys for destroyers. They are more easily found in pet stores nowadays. I've seen them at both mart and co.

Our 14-month old lab/boxer has yet to find an indestructible toy. Recently among her not-trashed-yet toybox are these

this (The ends of this one are very nearly obliterated, but I think the variety keeps her from totally trashing it.)

this sans rope (like PP has said, no real edges to hang onto, but she will chase this one all over the apartment.)

and something like this (I think she hasn't utterly destoryed this one because it comes with replaceable compressed rawhide rings that she's more focused on getting off than actually attacking the toy itself.)

  • I'm sorry I never got back to this thread! Thanks for all of the opinions. I am amazon browsing now for an easy walk harness and some toys :)
