Dog diarrhea- vet can't figure out what is wrong

Hi everyone,

I have never posted here, nor I have I done much lurking, so hopefully it is ok to just jump in with a question.  I have a 3 year old lab/vizsla mix who has been having diarrhea on and off for a few months now.  The vet has run just about every test under the sun and still can not find anything wrong with him.  His energy levels are still fine, weight is fine, he is eating plenty, no other symptoms besides the diarrhea.  I guess I am just wondering if anyone here has ever had the same issue with their dog and if you were able to get to the bottom of it?  I am at a loss here as to what to do.  I have call in to the vet to discuss this in more detail (she had just left a voicemail yesterday after the last round of tests came back) but I am honestly losing faith in the vet, I feel like she is just throwing every test she can think of at him hoping something will show up instead of using her medical background to narrow down what tests should be run.

Re: Dog diarrhea- vet can't figure out what is wrong

  • i had this with my puppy, we wound up switching foods. First we tried just switching the formula (from chicken and rice to fish) it only helped alittle. We decided to try the sensitive stomach formula and he improved greatly!  Has the vet suggested this at all?

  • We've gone through the same with our dog too and all tests were normal. We tried different foods and even tried bottled water for a bit in case there was something going on with our water. At the suggestion of a vet tech we finally switched her to the Rachel Ray food and had no problems since. She can handle treats in moderation and also gets a probiotic to help keep her good bacteria in balance.

Diarrhea can be a symptom of so many things that once they run through the most common it's difficult to know which way to go without any other obvious symptoms.

  • Thanks! I talked to the vet today and she had some diet recommendations and wants me to keep a food/poop journal for 2 weeks. Chrisnjay, what sensitive formula food do you use?

we use the Blue Buffalo Back to Basics formula for Large Breeds.

Good luck, hope the new diet suggestions from the vet work!

  • What food are you feeding?  and for how long have you been feeding it?

Have they tried any medical treatments that have helped, at least for a period of time?

  • In addition to potentially switching foods, you can add a spoonful of canned pumpkin (puree, not pie mix!) to your dog's food. It helps immensely with diarrhea, but in moderation. Adding too much pumpkin ends up swinging things back to the diarrhea end of the spectrum!

If you're not feeding grain-free already, that would be my first food switch suggestion.

  • What food are you currently feeding?  Also, what foods have you fed in the past that have or have not worked well?  It may just be a matter of finding the right fit.  One of my dogs had on-and-off tummy troubles (including loose stool) that completely vanished once we found the right food (for him, it's Wellness Core, any variety).  GL!

  • This sounds like a food allergy.

Try a novel diet, meaning a food containing an ingredient not in the average dog food - such as venison, buffalo, or kangaroo.

    Good luck!
